So I heard through the grapevine that the upcoming dub for Prince of Tennis is really bad. Not that I'd expect the voice actors to be bad or anything, but I heard that the script from this dubbing company isn't very good at all.

I've seen bad anime dubs before and I can't stand them. When I saw the Initial D dub I had to let out a Gasp of horror. They changed the classic Initial D Eurobeat to rap, changed the character names, changed some of the story, I couldn't take it. Should we let such a main stream anime such as Prince of Tennis lose its future audience of dub watchers because the conversion of Japanese to English was done very poorly? I think Viz should hire another dubbing studio to dub Prince of Tennis.

My personal opinion, and you may or may not agree, is to get Bang Zoom to do the dubbing. I think they did a pretty good job on Gungrave and Samurai Champloo, why not give them a shot at this.

Anyways that's just my 2 cents on the topic, anyone have an opinion they'd like to share? You're more than welcome.

OHMIGOSH.

Yeah. It's true. Some "new" dubbing studio. Lemme see.. what was it called..? Oh yeah... Salami Studios. Yes. Salami... Hmm. Nothing personal, but I dunno if I want a newbie dubbing studio named after a meat doing a mainstream anime dub. Haven't we suffered enough from One Piece?

From what I know, Prince of Tennis is their first anime. EVERYTHING is out of order. The ADR scripts suck, and the VAs have no direction whatsoever. They had a hand in other dubs like Astro Boy, but I do believe this is their first OWN try. And they're failing miserabley.

I second the proposal that it be handed to Bang Zoom! Entertainment, mostly because they're using BZ! VAs anyway. ((Which ones, I cannot say for security reasons.. the ones who informed me of this I mean)) So.. it's basically great VAs.. bad scripts. See.. you can be an awesome VA, but if your script is random and you have no direction.. you may as well be at "Mew Mew Power" 4kids level. Seriously.

I never watched PoT in Japanese and have seen the first five episodes in English. There really hasn't been a moment that made me think "wow, that voice sucks" or anything like that. Everything sounds fine to me, I honestly have no clue where all the dub bashing for PoT has been coming from the last month or so.

And what are some examples of the "bad scripts"? I doubt the original won any awards for it's writing.

I, on the other hand, have watched every bit of the anime thus far in Japanese, and I think the dub is GOOD. I've heard a lot worse dubs, and I seriously can't figure out this whole "it sucks!" thing.

I haven't come across any real bad script writes. The Twist Serve to Kick Serve is far better than the writing of the English manga.

Oh come on. Prince of Tennis's dub isn't all that bad. I was just like the subs. So there's no need to complain. Plus, Toonami Jetstream didn't edit it because there was nothing for it to edit out. I don't care about whether a dub is good or bad (The One Piece dub wasn't that good, though). As long as the show is awesome or the voices are interesting, I don't need to make a statement whether it's good or bad.

It wasn't good, you say? What happened to this?:

THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT, 4KIDS! YOU SHOULD LEAVE THE GOOD ANIMES ALONE!

I HATE YOU!!!!!

Well, I guess some things change (like a "HATE" for 4Kids?). Time heals all pain, I guess.

Well, back to the topic. I've only seen 2 episodes of the dub so far (I haven't had time to watch more), and I think it's pretty good. I don't think any voice is particularly annoying....yet. I think all the voices fit the characters. But if you get me started talking about Ginta from MAR...... you're not going to be able to get me to shut up. The guy who plays Ginta has the most idiotic voice I've ever heard. I used to complain about Sai from Hikaru no Go before because he sounded like a 40 year-old, menopausal woman, but he started sounding about as manly and slick as Frank Sinatra when I heard Ginta's voice. "GO BABBO!" I hope Ginta dies early on in the series, but it's highly unlikely, seeing as how he is the main character and all. Rolling Eyes

Well played SharinganEyes92. I don't have any qaulms about the voice acting itself, I just heard that the translation was aweful.

Maybe this studio needs more practice before it takes on big jobs like PoT. But then again I haven't seen the dub myself, this is all just hearsay. But Since I heard it was bad I just wanted to make sure there wasn't another blunder like Initial D, and if you say that Initial D's dub wasn't bad...then...well....ya........

anwyays, anymore thoughts?

I checked out the Prince of Tennis on Toonami Jetstream. It isn't that bad. Ryoma sounds cool, but the coach and the seventh graders sound kinda weird.

Whoah now.

I never said the dub sucked. I'm saying the scripts/translation does. And when I compared it to "Mew Mew Power", I was more trying to play into.. it's just short of having everything butchered. I mean.. for Hell's sake they Americanized all their names in that. I'm greatful enough they didn't do it to PoT. ((Of course, it is two different companies.. but yeah))

The dubs are okay. Because they're using really good voice actors. I have very little qualms over that.

I know. I'm just saying that the dubs are a B+ in my book, because the girls and Ryoma sound cool. The seventh graders voices seem too immature though.

I think the seventh grader voices are among the best. They fit the characters perfectly, which is immature commentary. Horio (annoying "two-year tennis" kid) annoys me just as much as he did in Japanese, so they did a great job with him, especially.

I honestly don't have a problem with the dub....infact, it is the only dub, outside of those not shown on cable tv/a select few on Adult Swim, that is watchable.......sure, Hikaru no Go's dub isn't that bad, neither, but Sai's voice....gah.....but yes, atleast Sai's voice is better than Ginta's from Mar....

I don't see why the distributor chose such a new company in the first place when studios like Bang Zoom are right around the corner. Even though the voice actors may be great, a great dub depends on all aspects of production, not only the voice acting.

Speaking of distributors, and maybe I should start a new post on this or something, but oh well: Which dubbing group(s) do you guys like? or would like to see doing more animes?

If you can, give an example of work done by the group you like (I ask, because I must admit that I'm not buff enough on the subject to know the work done by most voice acting studios)
