55.7 dollars per movie. Actually not TOO bad for Aniplex but still about 25 dollars higher than other anime movie bluray.... I really want to get this but that's far out of normal people's (my) price range....
Why they can't have standard prices like Funimation, I don't get. Especially since I'm assuming they don't pay a license fee since Aniplex is Aniplex , I guess now I need to beg for a standard DVD version that costs around 20 dollars...even though it will look terrible. |

Roflolololol. $400 is standard price for a blu-ray box set now?
Of course it is. Of course it is for AoA. Honestly. If these people aren't put out of business through their own stupidity, then they will be the death of the industry stateside as a whole. Simple as that. |

It is not the North American branch releasing this. Price seems pretty standard for one of their Japanese releases. |

first of all, it's 36,750 yen and it's not AoA. |

Ah, so this is the Japanese release. I got worried for a sec.
I still assume AoA will release this as an import in place of doing a (somewhat) cheaper US release. One can only hope one day, but Im not bankin on it. Not unless Viz and Neon Alley decide to pull a Blue Exorcist and Fate Zero with it and pay for the dub themselves |

So what's the difference between this release and the old one?

Probably just the disks. No art boxes or books or anything else. |

Except we both know that's exactly what the price will be when AoA gets around to it. Hell, they probably won't even bother to change the packaging - they'll just include a crappy "translation booklet." |

AoA typically reduces the price of their imports by a small amount, but it would probably still be in the $250-$300 range. Why would they change the packaging? Thats the point of the import releases, its the JP boxsets as-is. |

And the BluRays will still look the same (or worse, in quite a few scenes) than the DVDs no matter what the price is... It's a shoddy upscale and the people who complain about not having access to the BluRays don't realize they're missing out on barely anything. The only movie that looks better on BluRay is the finale original animation and it is 100% talking. Literally. Nobody's missing out on anything important except less motion artifacting on the snow that falls for the entire movie during a dialogue scene that lasts for 30 minutes (the entirety of the finale, which is, by the way, spoiler[retconned into non-canon in supplementary material]) The only reason to want it on BluRay is if you want to spend more money. The upscaler in your BD player will likely do a better job with the material than Aniplex's inhouse upscale did. Seriously. This is just a cash-in and PR grab for the release of Fukan Fukei 3D this summer and Mirai Fukuin this fall.
With their past few imports, AoA has actually set a precedent of charging $70-120 more shipped (to anywhere in North America, for serious) than it costs to import the same box from Amazon.co.jp. And AoA disallows 2nd day air shipping, so unless you live in Iowa, and even then, you're probably more likely to get the package from Amazon.co.jp faster. edit: Also, their only import that was actually cheaper to buy from Rightstuf than from Amazon.co.jp was the original Garden of sinners box. Every other import has had a slight premium attached to the U.S. batch, and it's been increasing each time they announce a new one, with TTGL setting the new high for how-much-higher-than-Japan the price is. |

The earlier movies weren't animated at 1080p but are definitely higher resolution than DVD as the Blu-rays show a large increase in detail: http://www.mania.com/aodvb/showpost.php?p=1900053&postcount=312 http://www.mania.com/aodvb/showpost.php?p=1901064&postcount=356 |

And again people who can't afford a luxury item come to complain about how it isn't fair and how its not worth it. You do realize that the 1st BD KnK set was $400 and it now sells for over $900 on ebay? Even tho people are selling the JP version for $700 people still pay $900+ for the AoA version. Apparently people will pay more than AoA prices so please stop complaining and save or just buy the cheaper DVD set.

Those are some of the more friendly shots. I own both sets and I prefer to watch the DVD version, honestly. Some of the more motion heavy scenes get very... I'm not sure how to describe this - "oily?" in the BD version. It makes me feel like I should be wearing glasses. I watched the BD versions once each and put them away, I've watched the DVDs more than once since they were released. Here's a shot of my top shelf with both the BD and DVD boxes, if my word's not enough. http://i.imgur.com/Rz8euFl.jpg |
