Hiya everyone. Well I've been wondering why Cowboy Bebop was soooo popular in the States but not really cared for in Japan. CBBB's music seems to be catered to Americans since has mostly Jazzy Americana music in the soundtracks. In my opinion, the anime had a great characters, animation, and such a good story line, yet, it didn't make the cut on Japan's tv ratings. Sailor Moon and Heat Guy J are very popular in Japan, but not too many Americans are huge fans of the series. Many say is because of the musical scores. I don't see why people just can't over look the music and see teh story lines and characters for what they are. I guess music can really make or break a series.

Cowboy Bebop isn't popular in Japan right now because it's about ten years old. Is it even still on TV in Japan? It's still popular in North America because it was many people's first exposure to anime. And I don't know what kind of rock you're living under, but Sailor Moon isn't popular because of its soundtrack.

Actually, some cable channels run it every now and then and it's still got a fairly big following in Japan for a show of that age.

Well, I kinda agree that music can make or break an anime and I've never seen Cowboy Bebop so I don't know what the music is like. And also:
Sailor Moon isn't popular because of its soundtrack
I agree. I think its sumthing compleatly off from its music. And I'm not going to say what because this is about music.

*thinks to self* I shoul maybe see what Cowboy Bebop music sounds like...

No, I understood you. You're saying that music can make or break a series, and while I agree that a fitting musical score can certainly add to the atmosphere of a show, I don't think shows like Sailor Moon or Cowboy Bebop remain popular because of their soundtracks. I believe most of the music was written specifically for these series. I think it’s more common that an anime that uses the hottest new single by a popular artist for the theme song will have a sudden surge of popularity around the beginning of the series’ air.

I somewhat agree with your point. Yes, if a series have good music, such as a good opening theme, it will attract more attention. After all, if you're watching television and a horrible theme song is playing, how badly would you like to watch the show? Music can make or break a show, but think about it. Wolverine Princess has made a good point about a series only attracting viewers because it used popular music.

I think that a good storyline will keep the fans coming even if the music isn't the best. If the story is no good, then most people will say, "The only thing good about that series was the music." That's basically what I say about the Magic Knight Rayearth anime, which I disliked compared to the manga. The only thing I liked about it was the music, but even that wasn't enough to hold my interest. Or, in other cases, I disliked most of the music but I was still interested in the show. I think that a combination of a good and interesting story as well as good music is more likely to make or break a series than music alone.

Here's a slightly different view of it, I really hate it when US companies change the music to anime series. I'm not really talking about opening and endings here, mainly BGMs. The first example of this I saw was Dragonball Z. When they changed the music, it really changed the mood of the show. A lot of scenes went from serious and tense to cartoony and corny just by the change in music. And the change in dialogue made a difference too. So that's one example of how music can change a show.

Yes. Also, while the American version of Dragonball Z only has one opening song the Japanese version has 2 and two different opening sequences. I'm jealous.

"BGMs"?

BGM = background music. I don't know what the "s" is all about though, since the plural form of "music" is... well... "music."

That's too bad about jazz. Kanno really did good writing that song for BeBop.

Now how about funk? I was watching my FMP! collection, and I noticed that the AS21 terrorists were using the George Clinton as a hideout. Now, I suppose it is the two US presidents, but there already is a George Clinton. He is funk. Like Parliament, and his All Stars band that tours today.
I only noticed one slightly funky beat in FMP! And I think for the most part the music matches well the action and drama. You don't notice it, unless you are paying strict attention.
