Well, as I said elsewhere, it won't be long until AnimEigo has no anime in its inventory. Kinda sad, but then life is all about things changing.

Should they still call themselves Animeigo when that happens?

Animeigo are selling off all volumes of Kimagure Orange Road TV, OVA and movie at $5.99 a piece.

Check it out here: http://www.animeigo.com/

Animeigo did try to renew their license but sadly failed. This was most likely due to a increased fee on the license.

As I mentioned in the Anime forum, I've never seen the series yet. But after a recent peak of interest, I decided to buy the whole series from their site and give it a try. Hopefully if someone ever relicenses it, they won't make it superiorly better or anything Anime smallmouth.

Anyone else surprised by this?

Me neither.

Sadly, the older companies keep forgetting that you can't ignore the industry for too long, else you will pay the price.

AnimEigo was once one of the shining stars of the industry, for the past 5 years or so, I haven't heard a peep out of them.

I've watched it a bit not a bad show about a 7 of 10.

AnimEigo obviously was never serious about keeping this series with the some of the rumors about what they offered to re-license it. Like Yoda said they just seem to have rolled over and died from entering into their mid-teens. But I guess everything has it time and everything must someday turn from gold to poo

I really like KOR, it was a great show, one of the better "old school" romance animes. That said, unless another company picks up the license and releases it to great reception, I don't blame AnimEigo if they weren't willing to bend over backward to relicense it. It doesn't have the new market "legs" of a Naruto or Bleach or the repeatability of an Evangelion. This was a show the older fans loved and I'm sure most of them bought it. I don't think (as good as it is) KOR was worth paying some huge re-license fee for. I say good for AnimEigo for not overpaying for a show.

Ya good point, perhaps in time (hopefully soon) someone will realize that too much was asked/demanded and come back for something a bit more reasonable.
I'm fond of the old school but if it was between something like KOR/oldschool vs. Bleach/Naruto/etc. anime I'd have to go with the latter.

I agree that it's an older license, but if you ever watch it at a con it still packs in quite an audience.

I wholeheartedly agree that you can't keep all of your licenses forever, however AnimEigo has let themselves go when it comes to anime.

Robert Aldritch might be right when he recently remarked that they were what anime companies ought to be, but if the cost is at losing all of their titles just to prove a point, then it's a phyrric victory at best. I liked what AnimEigo did in the early 90s, it was revolutionary for their time. But their behavior within the last 8-10 years has been truly strange to me.

With some luck, ADV will pick up the title. They already have the rights to one of the movies within that franchise.

I'm quietly confident Animeigo are sitting tight for now waiting for over inflated licensing fees to drop.

Then they will hopefully make a surprise announcement or two.

I can't remember the last time they actually licensed an anime.

Area88: At a Viz AX panel a couple of years ago, a rep mentioned that Animeigo's license for UY previously expired, and Animeigo offered them the opportunity to pick it up, but the fanbase for UY didn't want Viz handling it. Seeing how long they took to finish Maison Ikkoku, I don't blame them.

I can personally confirm that AnimEigo is interested in licensing more anime. But their buying power is obviously limited compared to everyone else.

It's a shame to see AE falling apart like this, and a shame that such a great series will be unavailable for awhile. I have a feeling if anyone picks it up again it's probably Viz.*sigh*

Oh well.
