rather over-fond of young girls' crotches

That's the point of an otaku-pandering show like this. Well, not exactly the point, but the exaggerated focus on crotches is very much intended.

At any rate, I didn't think much of this show. Pretty much dropped it after the third episode. Since I watch it during the same period that I watch Kotoura-san and Maoyuu, I was very much disinterested in this show. And I can enjoy otaku-pandering shows as much as the next guy, but this show was like the tomato in my sandwich of awesome anime consumption, and I hate tomatoes like that whatsherface in this show.

I watched the first five episodes as my guilty-pleasure anime of the season (alongside the titles I was actually looking forward to: Maoyo, Chihayafuru 2, and Little Busters). It was halfway decent and managed to keep me coming back each week through its half adorable and half awesome theme (I loved Strike Witches).

However, I had to call it quits with the beach episode. I can't even bring myself to watch it. There was a line, and it's been crossed.

... Remind me again why a show appealing to its target audience is a flaw?

Anyways it's a harmless and fun show. It's not really trying to be anything butt (haha).

I've never really gotten why people complain about fanservice in a fanservice show. It wouldn't be doing its job if it lacked the fanservice.

Like look at Vividred... take away the ass shots everywher and other fanservice stuff, and you're left with very little. The fanservice is what makes it worth watching.

I'd still thoroughly enjoy Vividred without the ass shots, personally.

Probably the same why people think Hollywood appealing to their audience as a flaw maybe? Laughing

Now ya know how Michael Bay films can have so much explosions! Laughing

Yeah, I appreciate the T&A service, but it's Takamura's character designs (and the good job the staff is doing at consistently drawing them) that is really keeping me watching. No amount of skinservice is going to keep me watching if the characters aren't actually nice to look at.

Because it's being judged on the metric of "Is it any good?" as opposed to "How much does it satisfy fans?"

Well damn - a very fair, even-handed review. I think the needle will swing between decent and good depending on how they deal with Homura's story. I'm enjoying the fights (though episode 2's was a level above the rest) and Akane's cheerfulness, but I think some of the freshness is wearing off.

Oh, and I'm pretty neutral on the butts, although they do add to the fun atmosphere if you're not easily creeped out. Plus, the eroticism is well-depicted, and skill in a craft is always worth appreciating. It's why I enjoy watching Boku no Pico, for instance.

@inurtsol: fanservice may be a selling point, but you'd be unfair to say it's the only thing worthwhile about the series, whereas in criticism of Hollywood films - and using Michael Bay as the example as in the one you gave - it's that it's flash and style over substance. Everyone in this thread and the reviewer have expressed appreciation of Vividred Operation regardless or in spite of its fanservice, after all.

Except whom that was replied to ("take away the ass shots everywher and other fanservice stuff, and you're left with very little").

yet series like also bit power rangers as well yet it find quite good to watch.

besides sure seem deja vu a bit like strike witches & other shows similar to power rangers.

wonder if get dub yea so likely it must be & better if make crossover with strike witches well then yea it bound to happen.

Succeeding at hitting a target six inches in front of you is not much of an accomplishment.

Ah, I missed that one. I also only meant to say of the people that did like it, too.

That doesn't make it a flaw, though, just not a very worthwhile strength. You wouldn't say good action scenes in a badly-written action movie made the movie worse, would you? No, you'd just say they didn't make the weak film any better - though they might make it more entertaining.

Succeeding at what a show aims to do makes it a successful show. Just because you're not the target demographic doesn't mean that it didn't do what it set out to do.

Eh, these amount to the classic it's-not-that-bad defense, which is rarely persuasive and almost never encouraging. The flip side of that is the implicit message that it's "not that good" and necessarily worth the time investment. If it is, the case isn't made with kind of arguments I've gotten.

For me the C- minus on story and the list of flaws the review optimistically estimates that a viewer can overlook are enough to convince me to not have a look at it, particularly combined with how shamelessly the trailers embraced the male gaze. I also don't have that much free time to take a chance on just anything. This seems like a reasonable position to me. If you find that the action is in fact good enough for you to override the flaws, then I'm happy for you I suppose.

Sorry though: not every goal has inherently equal creative merit. If I were to get out of bed in the morning, eat breakfast and then lounge around in my pajamas all day for a week, I can say this was a plan that I was "successful" in accomplishing. But that wouldn't alter the unfortunate reality that it's success at being lazy.
