Maybe he's a variant on the gamer cafes there that have resulted in a handful of deaths from overplaying...

If that guy wants to do nothing but read manga all day without paying anything, he should just come to Books-a-Million stores in the U.S. where it's perfectly legal.

This is an amusing tidbit of news from Japan, but it has to be said that it has very little to do with manga or anime. For the life of me, I can't really see what it's doing on ANN's news coverage.

How'd he live in a cafe? Wouldn't the employees kick him out? Funny though!

Well, I'll have to admit that I did find it amusing -- not least because I'm currently watching Maid in Akihabara, where the lead character is living in an internet café stall.
So, I'll buy into the whole human interest / man-bites-dog reasoning and admit that I was wrong... it does sort of belong. Like Zac and his kitty fetish, it lightens the mood.

I've been trying to figure out how the total came out to 150,000 yen. He was there for 34 days. That's 816 hours. The cafe charge 1,000 yen for every 9 hours. That comes out to around 90,667 yen. He ordered a grilled beef dinner his first day, but spent the other 33 days eating only coffee and toast. Does that much food really come out to nearly 60,000 yen!?!? That must have been one expensive beef dinner!

Manga cafes can have tiny cubicles with doors that close. The cubicle is big enough for a nice chair and a desk with computer and tv. I imagine he just stayed in there. They are pretty comfy but they feel constraining after awhile. You can spend the money for a night rate and its alot cheaper and more comfy than a hotel if you miss the last train. You get a card when you enter that says when you entered and are charged based on the time you spend in the cafe. Usually, they have the cashier by the exit., so I guess he never even left the building. Like a mole. And I guess nobody realized he had been there that long/ were too polite to say anything

If the factoid from Negima #9 about Bottomless No-Panties Cafes is right (¥2700 (around $23.00 right now) for No-Refill Coffees), then I wouldn't put it past these cafes to have overpriced food.
