Great reviews again, and I wholeheartidly agree with them too.
Black Cat is as generic as can get, Pastel is lame and only worth a look for some female chests.
Bokurano sounds interesting too Razz

That makes me wonder, if the manga Black Cat was generic, what about its anime counterpart? After seeing the entire series, Gonzo clearly didn't draw out this series out like your everyday shounen action series (long-winded battles, enemy per day, and so forth). Hell, they did something that's more dynamic (please correct me if this also happened in the manga), have at least 5 enemies go against Train all in one episode (he does a good job evading their attacks though; I always thought he's going to get pummeled like a pulp). Now only if they animated them better. Rolling Eyes

You've obviously never lived in Southern California. Wink

Doesn't look that way by the cover...

There's something unsettling yet thoughtful about Yubisaki Milk Tea's confrontation of sexual issues that polite readers would rather dodge. Why yes, Hidari is right on the verge of puberty—so where will Yoshinori draw the line between friendship and attraction? And why does his crush only talk to him when he's cross-dressed?

Sounds like the author's trying to cash in on the success of High School Girls.

HSG may be the only title of its kind in English translation, but I find it hard to think of it as something unique in the Japanese market. Other than that, crossdressing was never the central plot device in HSG, so it sounds like comparing apples to oranges to me.

Welcome to Planet Gatsu, where anything that even remotely resembles something that came before it is a deliberate ripoff cash-in, even if the thing it's supposedly ripping off wasn't a financial success.

Yessss Pastel. 1st volume was alright but the 2nd one nearly put me to sleep. The backgrounds are very well drawn actually but that's all it has going for it right now. The boobs are alright too but I feel like a pedophile for looking at them.

I looked into Pastel becuase of the gorgeous art and girls (I like fanservice too sometimes), and it's mediocre but tolerable. I wouldn't buy it, but at least it isn't painful to read like alot of those titles.
Pretty slow week though. I thought Bokurano was interesting, even if Kitou is recycling ideas. I imagine it would have a better chance in the US than Narutaru since people can't dismiss it as a kiddie series based on the cover.

This is the first time I've heard Flame of Recca referred to as a classic, but its nice to hear that about my favorite shounen manga.

After reading the review of Pastel vol. 2, I'm glad I dropped this series. I thought I heard good things about it somwhere and I thought it might be a decent shounen romance, but it seems I was wrong.

I re-read his post and I think he is referring the frank discussion of sex or something, not the cross-dressing, but I'm not sure. It's still only a vague similarity though. It's hardly "cashing in" on something.

And I didn't realize High School Girls was a huge blockbuster, either. Rolling Eyes

BOKURANO, from what your saying seems to be Gantz meets Fafner from what the review, sounds like it could be intresting.

Me as well. I don't consider Flame of Recca a "shonen classic", though putting my rather indiffrent opinion of the series aside, I suppose you could classify it that way becuase of it's popularity (in that case nearly everything in Shonen Jump could be considered classic).

Have you ever picked up an issue of the Japanese weekly Shounen Jump and read it? There's a lot of series that get published there that never really get off the ground, and are ended after maybe a few tankobons' worth of material. On the other hand, the series that do make it are obviously the ones that were popular and money-making, and those last longer and are the ones you actually hear about.

Funny. I thought Someday's Dreamers was one of the best manga I've ever read, up there with ARIA and PlanetES.

But I think the faces make them look sympathetic. It's both the art and the mood created in Pastel that are its strong points. The fanservice tends to distract from it, though fortunately it's not as heavy in the later volumes. I did raise a mighty eyebrow at the comment about hot bodies. They are certainly well drawn but I've read mangas with hotter girls.

If it wasn't a success, they wouldn't make an anime out of it.

Dunno about Scientology, but Anno certainly likes to take religious references out of context like Jack Chick. Rolling Eyes
