Hi all I've been looking into listening to more j-pop, and outside of various anime themes and endings, I'm overwhelmed. I'm asking anyone who wants to to comprise a playlist with a lot of good diverse j-pop stuff, to help me and others who are new to the genre get to know what artists are good.

Hamasaki Ayumi is what you could call the queen of J-pop right now. She has had so many no.1 hits, and there's not a single person in Japan who doesn't know of Ayu.

Hmm, these 21 should give you a pretty full range:
Hikaru Utada, Ayumi Hamasaki, Koda Kumi, BoA - pop B'z, L'Arc~en~Ciel, X Japan - rock m-flo, Namie Amuro - hip-hop Bennie K, melody - R&B Chemistry - soft rock Ayaka Hirahara, Chihiro Onitsuka - folk/pop Double - jazz Boom Boom Satellites - techno/jazz Mika Nakashima - pop/rock/jazz SENS, Cagnet - mostly instrumental, light pop/New Age Dreams Come True, Bonnie Pink - everything in between Admittedly I suck at charting music this way, so ask if you have questions! |

Gackt has an excellent range of styles all by himself From sugary pop to R&B to classical piano to heavy rock to heartbreaking ballads and all kinds of things in between... I'd highly suggest checking him out.

Well I here are some more artists that weren't mentioned that I like and maybe you too:
Beat Crusadersm, Asian Kung-Fu Generation, Flow, Orange Range, The Pillows, Do As Infinity, Yui Horie and T.M Revolution. Also Megumi Hayashibara also has alot of good songs. Also on a quick note Namie Amuro style of music is hip hop? I thought it was pop. Oh well I guess you learn something everyday. "Believe it!" - IchigoK90 |

Amuro's early stuff is pop, her later stuff hip hop.
In addition to the famous names that Mays recommended I could add megastar Shiina Ringo and the band Tokyo Jihen that she later formed. A fairly new pop singer worth checking out is Ai Otsuka. In the R&B department you might also want to listen to Heartsdales. It's a new act that mixes English and Japanese words in a delightful way. If you like Britpop then the sound of Tommy february6 (previously heavenly6) should be fun. A small endnote for Jonathan. Yui Horie and Megumi Hayashibara are seiyuus, japanese voice actresses. Their singing is not that hot and the same can be said for most of their music. However, since a large part of their repertoire is anime songs they do have the advantage of familiarity. |

What about any of the stuff from Love Psychedelico?
My favorite song from them is "I'll be with you" off their 2nd album. Also, has anyone mentioned Dir En Grey, Psycho le Cemu or High and Mighty Color? Those are 3 bands worth checking out. |

I like music by Megumi Hayashibara (Sakura Saku being my favorite). From what I can gather from my searches, she sings alot of Anime theme songs. I also listen to "Scarlet" by BRACE;d, and "Happy Material" (don't know the artist)from Negima.
