Great. Just what we need. A stupid documentary on stupid people. Now, if it was Japanese Otaku and not dumb, annoying US fans...

...what makes you so convinced that the Japanese fans are not also 'dumb and annoying'? |

Oh silly Zac... must you be lectured about the Shangri-La that is Japan again? |

Isn't that an unrealistic way of thinking? :/ |

wildarms, while normally I would agree with you about the dumb anime otaku comment, your posts in this threadanimenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=22016 have forced me to disagree with everything you post.

Probably because he himself engages in many of the activities that serve to make Japanese otaku as annoying and outright creepy as they are, and doesn't want to defame himself by admitting to their inherent faults. Or at least that's what the thread outlawwolf linked to has led me to believe. |

Bamboo did a review on the convention version of this documentary a while back, but from what the case said when I looked at it in the store today some newer content has been added. (It makes references to Otakon 2005.)

Would have been fun to see at a convention. I'm hoping to pick this up-love documentaries, this could be very interesting especially as I've yet to attend a convention

Of all the anime documentaries I've seen--Go Go Anime (fan centric), Hello Anime! (industry centric) and Otaku Unite (mix of both)--Otaku Unite actually is the most balanced.
It starts off by actually giving you a broader overview of what anime fandom really is and how it got its start by showing footage from early, early anime and interviewing some of the first anime fanzine people. From there, it touches on conventions, cosplayers, industry folks and lots in between. It's not perfect as the AWA cut from late 2003 that I saw did have some slow spots, but hopefully thats gotten tweaked since then. I'm actually still curious if the parts about Ironcat are still in there since that company went under so long ago... |

The only difference will be that in most cases, you will be documenting dumb, annoying Japanese fans. If it's the Japanese perspective of fandom that fascinates you, go watch Genshiken, it'll do the trick nicely |

I saw this in the Anime Section at Best Buy the other day. At first I thought it was a new anime I never heard of, but when I realized what it was, I put it back.
I wouldn't mind watching it, in fact I would like to, but I don't think I'd shell out the money for it. According to the Japanese, female, exchange student at school, Otakus are people who have no life and spend all of their time at home jacking off to hentai. Atleast us Americans aren't labeled in that manner in our country. In other words, I'm pretty sure there are stupider otaku's in Japan than in America. Pretty cool story about this student. She went out, Boyfriend Girlfriend, with one of my friends, and after we graduated, she was sad cause she didn't want to leave him and go back to Japan. She ended up leaving, and a couple of days later my friend flew down to Japan, met her parents, proposed, and came back to America. Now they're both attending college and still really happy together. We used to love playing DOA for the XBox and setting the language to Japanese. She would laugh at us cause we would try to repeat the words and end up saying crazy words that made her laugh even more. |

I had the privilege of watching Otaku Unite at Otakon 2004. It was definitely an interesting view on American fandom. Unfortunately it ended short do to some bugs. I cant give my full opinion on the film until i see it to the end; no that is finally out, I can finish it.

Got my copy today. Fairly interesting thus far. They start with Kaiju Big Battel and then jump to the beginnings. Cue hearty helpings of Otaku no Video clips.
