Ahh this was my first anime wayyy back when it first aired in the states. I'm kind of in your same shoes...I think I liked it because I was always eager to watch it but don't recall very much of it. In any case, it's kind of a power-ranger type of deal, with five main young male characters with special body armor that helps them to fight against the evil guy. That being said, it probably isn't a strikingly good series or anything, but entertaining if you like those types of shows. There are probably a lot of better animes out there that you might want to pick up though...just my take on it.

I would wait if I was you. I rememeber this series being a whole lot better way back in the day... Ronin Warriors on Toonami days, I don't even remember if it was called Toonami. I picked up the 1 of the movies, and it was okay.
What I meant by waiting is that it probably won't be long before Bandai announces it as an Anime Legend title. Escaflowne and Ronin Warriors came out in "Box Sets", in a case like Street Fighter II V, around the same time. they were both available at Best Buy, and I'm pretty sure other stores, for $100, like $150 msrp if memory serves right. In April 11th, Escaflowne Anime Legends Box Set comes out and retails for $50, $49.98 is you wanna be precice. In other words I say you should wait a couple months to see if Ronin Warriors is announced for only $50 MSRP, probably be between 35 and 40 dollars at Best Buy. Unless it receives the Gundam Wing treatment, because there are so many episodes, and gets released in two seperate volumes for $50 Msrp each. |

Well, I just looked at the websites for Suncoast & Right Stuff, while they both had indivdual DVDs listed, there was nothing about box sets, yet. This is one title that I'd like to get myself. I, too, vaguely remember seeing this. I think I liked it because of the tiger.
On ANN encylopedia it is also called Samurai Warriors/Troopers. Why was it changed to Ronin Warriors. Because if I'm correct, a ronin is a masterless Samurai. Didn't the 5 heros have a master? I seem to remember an old wise man. For that matter, back in the day, wouldn't people have been more familar with the word "Samurai" rather than "Ronin?" So why was that changed? Or was it to make it more "kid" friendly, yada, yada, yada? |

Thats like asking why Rurouni Kenshin was released under Samurai X in the US... it just was. I think many anime have gone through name changes when releasd in the U.S. The box set I said was $100 was apperantly discontinued by Bandai but Best Buy still has it listed. It's not listed in the Right Stuf website and the Escaflowne one isn't either. Best Buy still has Ronin Warriors Complete Collection but my price was wrong, it actually sold for $140, the MSRP must have been higher. But the release I'm waiting for with I guarantee you will be cheaper IF released will be the ANIME LEGENDS edition. Anime Legends is what Essential Anime is to ADV, Signature Series is to Geneon, Greatest Hits is to PS2, it's the same thing, released cheaper and in a different case. |

It's a good show if you can still appreciate episodic anime. If you really want to get back into it, then go for it. Otherwise, I personally have been waiting off on picking this one up again because I'd like the discs to be a little cheaper.

This was also my first series. And I love it still. For those that haven't seen the sub, it's amazing how different in tone it is from the dub - it's like another show.
As for the name change, when it aired on Toonami and when it was licensed, there was a show on (Fox, I think) called VR Troopers. I believe they didn't want to confuse people leaving the title as Armored Samurai Troopers. That, or they couldn't due to copyrights (much like Dectective Conan became Case Closed). I believe there is or was a boxset released that contained all 10 discs of the show and all 3 movies. I remember being upset as I had bought them all individually. But thems the breaks. Amazon has it for $60something. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002MHE8W/qid=1140616350/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-9433262-9411361?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=130 |

O, man... that brings me way back. I think I liked it up to the second season or so. (Iono, it's all kinda faint now.)
The fights scenes get kind of duller near the end, though, don't they? What with the white armor and all. And if I remember correctly the tiger (or was it a panther) also transformed... |

Yeah, the Tiger did. God, I haven't watched that since th OVA came out a few years ago. I remember it used to air along with gundam. If I remember correctly there were quite a few other anime airing then. |

It's not anime, but I remember ThunderCats used to air around that same time frame.
I have the OAV's and while not all that great, they still brought back memories and now I really hope Bandai announces an Anime Legends box set soon. |

Having emailed Bandai quite a few times about the possiblity of an "Anime Legend" release for Ronin Warriors, I can safely say that the odds of it happening are pretty slim.
Bandai has discontinued the Ronin Warriors DVD's due to lack of sales. If you really want to see Ronin Warriors released as an "Anime Legends" boxset then people need to start showing Bandai that they would be interested in buying such a set. Unfortunately the RW/YST fandom has been in a steady decline since the release of the OAV DVD's. The ideal solution would be to get the show back on TV. A run through of the episodes on Adult Swim would be a good way to bolster the ranks so to speak. |

I love this show dearly but, I don't think it will ever be popular again. For one, most folks into anime nowadays won't get into older shows. Ronin Warriors/Samurai Troopers is coming up on 20 years old. Two, the market isn't really supporting the older shows because of the anime market tapering off. It isn't much profitable to release older shows, seeing as how they don't sell as well as expected. Three, it got really mediocre to bad reviews from the major review sites like ANN, Anime Jump and AnimeOnDVD and I'm sure that helped things along as well. All in all, I wouldn't expect this baby to come back unless Bandai is willing to lose some money putting this back out.

Those are mostly bootlegs, actually. I'm guessing the real one is the one listed at $299 (I assume that $2300 one is a bad joke.) Note the 8-disc count... there should be 12. Both the Ronin Warriors and Escaflowne complete collections were made for the 2004 Christmas season, and discountinued shortly thereafter. They're pretty hard to come by now. I remember when they released, I could only afford one- I picked Escaflowne. Quite frankly, you're better off hunting down the singles cost-wise. I should borrow my boyfriend's discs sometime... I kinda miss this show... |

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, Yes, what a classic show! Really takes me back as well, as it was my first anime series too. (Though I didn't even know what anime was until DB/DBZ)
As for whether or not you'll like it, well it depends on either whether or not you're wanting to reminisce on old memories enough or if you are willing to handle pretty much a boy's version of Sailor Moon, or another Power Rangers type series. I remember distinct memories of it myself, and remember it was FAR different from the other shows I liked at the time as it was much darker and more serious than any of them, and it was like, the best show ever for me back then. Then I watched it all the way through on Toonami latter when I was like 13, didn't really like it quite as much now that I was older and had seen much better things by then, but still thoroughly enjoyed it as a good 'ole fashion action cartoon for kids that was much darker and more serious than anything else like it, and still kinda do. I definitely hold that series in high regard, even though I admit it really isn't all that good, mostly because I have such fond memories of it and owe so much to it.
Ah, yes, the tiger! He was bad a**! What was his name again? I can't remember. |
