As far as the "seeds of Madoka" go, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei was probably the biggest step along the path. I mean, look at this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CeTQLVEqAIY&feature=related

Its a really shame we haven't gotten it yet. I assume it's caught in the death throes of Media Blasters, though I really hope its not.

And the otaku pandering in Bakemonogatari feels like nothing compared to when they double down in the sequel, primarily with incest. Rolling Eyes

I'll admit that I was nostalgic for Tenchi in Tokyo and bought it. I rewatched the first episode on youtube recently as I haven't watched it since its TV run and enjoyed how dumb it was. After I rewatch it when my copy comes in I doubt I'll rewatch it for a long time, but I gotta have all those old toonami shows, regardless of quality.

Nice to hear your honest opinion about Natsume's Book of Friends, Justin. I understand that the idea of "teen who can see youkai, has tragic past, but eventually gains friends" isn't new but, I guess since I'm not "old", I can still appreciate the series as something sweet and easy to enjoy for casual fans.

I'm currently watching Bakemonogatari (yes, it's based on a light novel series) and I think it's okay. The stories are nothing special, the Suruga Monkey Arc was odd though, but I am enjoying the Studio Shaft visuals.

Given the fact that I've never seen Grave of the Fireflies, I wouldn't be happy at all to see it. But I guess it's very hard to dub a movie like that when it's very Japanese, as Zac said. So I would imagine either dub would sound inept compared to the original Japanese. But I'll still buy the Blu-ray.

I now know to stay away from Tenchi in Tokyo and to take that off my X-mas list this year. I'm still gonna buy the OVAs, movies and Universe though. Smile

I really can't wait to listen to the 00s show.

I'm unsure what you mean Zac when you said that Bakemonogatari just uses the plot as an excuse for having the girl naked. Rather than for the plot she was naked in order to provoke a reaction from the Main character. Multiple times in the first episode she made references to her body not being worth taking advantage of as well as admitting to having been conned several times previously. She's visibly unhappy when the Main character complements her figure. She also mentions multiple times that she doesn't trust other people helping her out of goodwill "I consider Kindness an act of hostility", including when she asks the Homeless man what reward he's trying to get for helping her. Aside from that it also coincides with her character as she derives enjoyment out of tormenting the Main character as well as preforming actions solely for seeing how the other person reacts to them. I suppose you could add Purifying for a ritual and not feeling comfortable wearing clothes because they feel heavy as reasons If you wanted to.

Aww, I really liked Vampire Hunter D myself. (Too bad that looks like its in licensing limbo...) Checked that out from the local library-- that as well as the original OVA series. Can't remember which I saw first, but whatever one it was, the movie impressed me so much more than the OVA. Everything about it seemed to exude coolness (and doing relative justice to Amano's art also helped). So that had the guy(s) from Ninja Scroll involved, eh? Maybe that could be called my Ninja Scroll....? Though I was already a few-to-several years into anime by that point.... and it's not like I hadn't seen personally "shockingly" violent anime before (for me, I guess it was the YuYu Hakusho movie!).

What was that "____ Kanojo" anime I heard close to the middle that Zac said was angst porn? (Its title sounded kind of muddled to me.) I just did a search of "Kanojo", and the first link I ended up clicking on in hopes of finding it .... turned out to be actual anime porn. Razz

Ah, now you're starting to make me doubt myself about wanting to see Wreck-It Ralph this weekend. Well.... surely that was better than Brave, at least, right? :/ Now that was disappointing

Ugh, "Christmas" anime... there really is such a dearth of it that "My Santa" does end up getting shown. :/ Maybe I can get the Utena movie into a showing room for our club and show that to demonstrate its usage of... uh, many Christmas colors (mainly red and white). Yeah.

.... Huh. My email question, which I re-sent Tuesday evening, didn't get brought up or said, one which had to do with Penguindrum. Did I send that in too late, or was there simply not enough time to get to it...? If either way, understandable, I guess. Sorry if I've operated under some wrong assumption about how or when ANNCast questions get answered. Might have to resend it again.

If you're sick of the usual vampire anime, I highly recommend Shiki. It's really well written, and manages to make them scary again.

By the way, Archer's coming back in January Very Happy

That was "Saishuu Heiki Kanojo", aka "Saikano" aka "She the Ultimate Weapon". Viz released both the 7-volume manga series and the 13-episode anime series a few years ago (as well as an OVA from a different POV). Not anime porn, though v7 of the manga gets into that territory...

Bakemonogatari is probably one of the most pretentious shows I've ever watched. I went on to watch Nisa and again, I just can't seem to get into it. This series is just so full of itself. I'm trying really hard but I just can't seem to like this series. Doesn't help that I find Araragi to be really despicable. Often times I find myself rolling my eyes and feeling the urge to punch him when I watched both seasons. :/ Has Zac or Justin watched Fate/Zero? I'm curious to hear what your thoughts on it are. For a non moe/fanservice anime that takes its story seriously, its the best I've seen in years. WATCH IT TO THE END!

Nice show, thanks for the Saikano spoilers, I was actually just going to watch it. Fortunately for me, I was in reach of the power plug, so when I hear "It ended with the guy on a bed..." I jumped and pulled the plug out of the speakers.

Hmm I don't recall any spoilers mentioned in the podcast, you're probably paraphrasing the part where Justin said it SHOULD have ended with "the guy laying on a hospital bed..."

Personally, Saikano has always been a favorite of mine, though I did watch it when I was in my late teens and only rewatched it once. And honestly, I'm not sure if I could ever watch it again. I own all of the manga, tried to read flip through it earlier this year, and I couldn't get past the 3rd volume....

I think it's a great show show to watch at least once (if you're into heavy-angsty stuff at least), but not a great series to revisit...It's really rough, both visually and story-wise.

I might get shit by saying this, but I agree with Zac. The story in Bakemonogatari is not that great. That is the reason that has kept Bakemonogatari, in my book, from being a Masterpiece.

Funny that Zac mentions the otaku pandering on Bakemonogatari. I did not notice much of it when I first watched it about two years ago. The BD set was expensive, but it is worth it for me for this great anime.

I just came to say I'm that one-guy buying the Tenchi Re-releases, to answer Justin's question. Laughing

Although admitingly even I don't care much for Tokyo, i'm just in it for the OVA & Universe series re-releases. Laughing Cool

I honestly don't know. I unplugged the speakers. I though a spoiler was coming.
