I recently bought Volume 5 of Maburaho, and after viewing the normal FBI warning label, I noticed a new warning label that went like this:
A.D. Vision's new warning label wrote: | The views expressed in this DVD and any supplementary material do not necessarily represent the views of A.D. Vision, Inc. and/or its subsidiary and affiliate companies. |
Apparently, A.D. Vision is not the only company that's adding a new warning label. Someone told me that Geneon added new warnings on their Girls Bravo releases for the series' sexual content. (I don't know for sure since I haven't watched Girls Bravo yet.) Why now are companies like ADV and Geneon adding these new warning labels on their releases? Is this a new government regulation that must be followed?
Thanks for your responses.

I've seen those for awhile now and alot of non-anime releases are putting them on DVD's. The first instance I remember seeing a warning like that was on the Ice Age DVD.

Nah, it's not a government regulation, just a sign of the times. Studios and distributors simply cover their behinds in case they catch flak for their releases. I don't really understand the need for it since it should be blindingly obvious that as long as its legal and a buck can be made, the media companies don't care what they peddle.

It's something that's been around for the past several years. They're in response to actor interview and behind-the-scenes features which may include statements and/or actions by people employed by a studio which the studio doesn't want to appear to endorse.

I've seen that warning a long time ago had to be at least 3 years ago. I can't remember what dvd it was with though. But guess there just trying to state that just because this DVD reflects so and so doesn't mean that's what there about....Just like if they brought out a porno (hypothetically speaking here) doesn't meant he company has those views of women or what not that's on the dvd...Good way of using in the courts when someone tries to go negative on a company saying there this and that. Also like Kazuki-san has said it is also dealign with interviews what they say on interviews are not what reflects off the companies so they can't get sued for what the interview says.

I saw this on the November 2005 Anime Advocates disc. I don't see what the big deal is, though. It's just a warning label.

I'm sure it has its roots in some big fuss some oversensitive parent or consumer made about one of the major companies releases. That's how most of these labels first start to appear, usually to cover their butts after someone proves a need for it.

Futurama and I think Ren and Stimpy have that warning on them, and those were released on DVD years ago. They pretty much need the warning give how much the audio commentaries ridicule FOX and Nickelodeon .

*Oh, no! A. D. Vision just insulted my race/religion/gender/ choice of breakfast cereal in their special commentary. I need to sue them every which way I can.*
Their just covering their butts, that's all. It's kind of sad that it has come to that, but it has.

Happy Lesson Complete Collection and I believe Kino's Journey Complete Collection has them as well. Just one of those things to help prevent idiots from suing for the littlest thing.

Yeah, I've seen the same thing on normal movie releases, usually pertaining to the interviews/commentary. In anime, I first saw that warning for the first disc of Ghost Stories from ADV, which makes a lot of sense, considering that the dub track satirizes Jews, Christians, and various other groups. Definitely a CYA maneuver.

It is also on the Eden's Bowey Thinpak, but not the Azumanga thinpak which was released right before it, so it looks like it is on all the new ADV releases.
