Respect to the author because instead of playing it safe, just becoming a hostage and obeying blindly the evil publisher to do whatever the hell it wants and screw her, she is instead fighting to make her voice and wishes heard and taken into account.
Wish more authors who are in the same predicament and dont have the "balls" to actually stand up, would do it. Respect to her, because it must be hard to fight alone with your publisher (Shogakukan no less!!) risking having your work cancelled and be labelled a rebellious/"rogue" mangaka (in the publishers eyes evidently). |

I think this is starting to make more sense. Editors/publishers often see it as their job to be a sort of barrier between other parties and authors, not "burdening" the author/creator with "minor decisions" and allowing them to focus on the work they need to do (i.e. keep creating). And I'm sure that some authors/creators don't mind being kept at arms-length from anime productions because it'd be easy to get stressed out and frustrated by all sorts of little things that are hard to control; some creators no doubt find it easier to let other creators just do their thing while they do theirs. But of course, not all creators feel that way; some really want to be involved in all the decisions about their work. The biggest mistake this publisher/editorial team seems to have made was not discussing this with the author in the first place and asking her how much she wanted to be involved. Because at the end of the day, if they guess wrong (as they apparently did here), it can hurt them in more ways than they might expect.

ITS NOT a simple matter of not being consulted for the anime or making specific requests, read the previous news, this is MUCH MUCH grave than that, so grave that she needed the help of an IP specialist!! And so grave that she decided to stop all work on her serialization since she was getting screwed BADLY by the publisher itself!!. Not by the mere editor that is most likely just following others, no way in hell the editor gets to decide that she does not need to be consulted for the anime, that she does not need to sign a contract and that she does not need to get any money from the anime adaption, if that was the case, the editor would have been fired by now and we would not even know of this.
I reiterate again, my full respect the author, you need big balls as a new author that just had its first work serialized to stand up to a big publisher like Shogakukan, not only that but you made it public for all of us to see how badly she was getting screwed. The pressure of the power and money from the publisher probably prompted her to make this public and out her work on hiatus in order to not be crusher without any fight at all. Most others authors that probably were, are and will continue to get screwed would probably piss their pants at the thought of standing up to a big publisher with power, specially the power to crush their dreams effortlessly. Also @ relentlessflame you are naive to think an author is happy to not be consulted and not have her/his/their wishes heard and taken into account for the sale of "not bothering" them with "minor" things. I am sure 99% of authors want to say who wants to voice certain characters, what song to use, how the script should go, etc, etc. If an author does not has any participation or minimum is because the publisher and anime production does not let them period, and just as a mere formality they might hear him/her out but dont promise they will do as the author wishes. Heck, theres anime that depict more or less how this works too, and in most you see how the author is usually unhappy and stressed out that his/her work is not being respected at all and that her/his wishes are never taken into account. I can only see the likes of big names like ODA/KUBO etc have some kind of influence since they hold some power as well after they have gained recognition, fame and are super stars and even so I doubt that influence is much to get away with how they really want things to go. They maybe consulted or specifically tasked (create characters, oversee script, be in charge of the script itself) in a project in most cases. |

Good for her. Row row fight the power. No, seriously. Don't put up with this abuse.
If you let these bastards trample all over your rights they'll just do it again and again and again, to you and to others. If it were a honest mistake or an editor thinking he knows what she wants better than she does then that would be one thing, but it's not. It's a malicious assault on her rights and authority as the author. I've really been enjoying the Polar Bear Cafe Anime but this makes me feel a little guilty, since the show is being made without the author's oversight when she obviously wants to be involved. I just hope she doesn't get blacklisted in the industry. I also hope that her fellow Manga-ka apply pressure on the publisher (even if only behind the scenes) to get this amicably resolved. Hmm, maybe Manga-ka need to have their own union. That would be pretty cool, though it might make it harder for new Manga-ka to break into the industry. Hmm . . . |
