Just wondering if anyone could offer their opinions about the manga or the novel. Sounds interesting, just not sure which version I want to pick up

I've read part of the manga in Shojo Beat. It was pretty good, actually, although I wanted to read more than a short preview chapter. The art is nice and the story is mostly done in a flashback.
My recommendation is to read both, because novels tend to be just as good, if not better, in my opinion. I definitely plan to pick up a copy of the novel.

The general rule about which will be better is that it's whichever one came first. I don't know which one of them that is, but I'd say go with that one. And then if you like the one you do pick, you can always get the other as well.

The book came first, but I've heard that the manga was a very good adaption of it.

Although I think you're talking about the "original" being the better version, that's not necessarily true. Just as an example, one could say (sorry for using an anime) GitS: SAC is better than the original movie. Don't get me wrong; I'm not saying you're pointing this out as a fact. It is indeed a general rule.
