Coincidentally, my mom and I had decided to get back into the Daily Show & Colbert Report when this episode aired.
I like how CLEARLY there is a Pokemon geek in Stewart's staff, and Stewart tries his damnedest to make it look like it's him. He'd have had me convinced if he didn't seem to think the first movie and 2000 were the same thing. The graphics were correct, but I think that's just the Pokegeek in his staff.
I wonder if any of his kids have played the games.
Everything was hilarious. EVERYTHING.

Someone on staff had a child or were themselves massive Pokemon fans a decade back.

Jon Stewart's was the best. Didn't think it would be that in-depth.

Why is this even on Anime News Network?! I watch anime to get away from American politics.
What is this, Kotaku? IGN? Does a 10-year-old contemporary Pokémon movie even count as anime in the cool cultural sense?

With that kind of phrasing, yes.
Otherwise, of course it does. I should think that would be self-evident based on the franchise's stature and the context the quote was made in.
Also: boo-hoo, Hulu.

Let me break it down for you.
1. The first two words of ANN are "anime" and "news".
2. Pokemon the Movie: 2000 is a Japanese animated film therefore it is relative for the Anime News Network to cover the story about Cain's quote of the song for the film.
3. The Daily Show and The Colbert Report are political satire shows who talk about news comically. It is, once again, relative for the Anime News Network to cover the two shows making fun of the Pokemon quote.
And now you know...

The real interesting thing is how 4Kids effectively may have shaped the political world of today when they inserted all that pop music and changed the movie's meaning. 4Kids influencing our political world.. let that sink in.

Just curious but is there any way to see Pokemon uncut legally?

And Ghost in the Shell SAC 2nd Gig will drive Japanese foreign policy for the next quarter century.

I wouldn't really consider this shaping or influencing the political world... yeah, a politician mentioned it, but TDS was making fun of him WAAAAY before this. I think it started with the first Republican debates. The pokemon stuff wasn't even mentioned then.
This bit was just some icing to the cake. Or the appropriate ending credits to his campaign.

Are you familiar with the phrase "non-news" ?

This has been designated as interest, which adheres to a relaxed standard of notability, not news, so I think that the rationale laid out by Keichitsu0305 more or less holds.

Took the words right outta my mouth, mate. My nerd senses were tingling when he started in on the 'lore.' The whole time I was thinking, "He's trying so hard to keep a straight face." LMAO
Good gawd, Cain. That "outing" was simultaneously the stupidest/funniest/geekiest thing I have ever heard a politician say.
