That's just the retail price. I'm sure other places will have it for a slightly lower amount, probably around the $120-$150 range.

I don't like it when publishers put box set out at the same day as the last DVD. I mean it's not fair for people who's been collecting it patiently one by one. Evil or Very Mad

This boxset is roughly the same price as the individual volumes, so this is the same as say, buying each individual volume when the 7th volume comes out.

Regardless, why the hell is it so expensive?

It's Geneon. They do this with a lot of their titles, and I think it's a matter of "you get what you pay for." Well, I'd say most of their titles are of pretty good production quality anyway..

A lot of stores that carry their stuff also keep the price close to MSRP. I think it has something to do with how much they (the retailers) get charged for purchasing the inventory and whatnot.

It may be expensive, but it is $20 cheaper than buying all 7 DVD's (MSRP wise anyway)

Besides, in 2 or 3 years this will be in their Signature Series set and it'll cost half as much.

It's Geneon. The same people that initially released Fushigi Yuugi in twin $250 box sets and NEVER reduced the price on them for like five or six years until phasing them out for the individual volumes.

I think ADV's got it right: Release the first volume (with and without the box), release the rest of the volumes on a semi-regular schedule, and then release a proper box set 6 months to a year after the entire series has been available, but have the sets go for the cost of maybe two or three volumes just so people who've never seen the series are likely to randomly buy it at a convention. (I know ADV isn't the only company to do this, but they're the first to come to mind.)

Why can't Geneon do things like this?

I agree, ADV's system for their anime is a lot better. I bought the Full Metal Panic! collectors box for 52.99 at Best Buy like a month ago. Which is a lot cheaper than the individual volumes which I had debated getting until I heard of the box set. Bandai is doing the same releasing Gundam 080, Gundam 083, and 08th MS team as cheaper box sets, just like they did with Zeta Gundam and Outlaw Star. Geneon just likes making $$$$$ and keeping finacially challenged people from picking up there series.
