Because they're idiots.
1. The film ISN'T ANIME.
2. The DVD isn't anything special
3. The movie is [expletive] awful, and anyone with a sense of taste should know this already.

Come on, Evangelion! I've got money riding on this! But knowing the recent buzz on Ghost in the Shell: Innocence (even though it was kind of low), one of those DVDs will probably win...

What exactly do they mean by "best DVD"? If they're nominating two GitS DVDs, they certainly can't be going by quality considering all the problems those releases had. And Lady Death will probably win, considering it's about as much anime as the Animatrix was.

Yes, but the difference is that the Animatrix was good, while Lady Death was a piece of ****.

Animatrix was done by several Japanese studios, and directed by serveral Japanese people.
Lady Death was based on an American comic book, directed/produced/scripted by a bunch of Americans, and animated by Koreans.
Animatrix is definitely more "anime" than Lady Death.

The Wachowski brothers actually wrote the script for 3 of the shorts in the Animatrix, the ones that I thought tied in most closely with the regular trilogy: Final Flight of the Osiris and The Second Renaissance (1 and 2). But yeah, everything else was Japanese.

That's a matter of opinion really. I thought it blew.

Yeah, that's what I was getting at. Some parts of the Animatrix were good, while others...weren't.

Assuming you just stick to the Dolby DVD's that come with the normal releases (which didn't have any of the problems of the DTS discs, except for the label swap in vol 2) the quality is simply insane on them. Besides, I had all my DTS/special edition discs replaced in a timely manner. They made a good choice.
The show is just plain gold. The pack-ins are incredible ("Be Human" is one of the best CD's I own), and the video/audio quality is crisp and delightful
