On one hand, yay Chris Patton!
On the other hand, ugh Stephen Foster directing. His track record as of late has been...less than inspiring. |

I really hope this is a joke dub. Chris Patton is typically gold in those. And ICE certainly is terrible enough that a dub mocking the show could work pretty well.

I was hoping they'd dub it with entertainers from a completely different (non voice-actor) line of work who would try (but not very hard) to pull off a job they were woefully underqualified for. Just to keep the same feel as the original.

Chris Patton? Haven't heard him in anime in awhile, hope he's coming back strong as he was 5-6 years ago

Chris Patton is back? Thought he'd pretty much retired from Anime Voice Work.

This! I once owned the dub DVD set of Fist Of The North Star: Legends Of The Dark King after upgrading from the Sub-only set that i used to have and the dub was so bad that i rewatched it in sub when i upgraded to the Blu-ray set recently plus i've heard so many bad things about his High School Of The Dead & Guin Saga dubs that i wonder why do they keep using him all the time. |

Yeeeeeeeah, Chris Patton is back but he's voicing a woman.
This is a gag dub. I've also heard that ICE is terrible, so okay, maybe it'll be fun, but considering that's pretty much what Foster's been doing with non-gag dub material recently (Angel Beats!, Guin Saga, High School of the Dead,) I'm kind of annoyed. It seems like not taking anything seriously is the only thing he's good at and he just kinda gets paid to do it absolutely constantly. I'd give my honest opinion of this attitude but it requires a forum-rule-breaking expletive or three. Oh, and don't even begin to tell me the Angel Beats dub was "good" or some nonsense because it didn't get the straight-up gag treatment the other two examples did. The phrase "sick with the cancer" was added in two or three times in succession, followed by some of the most hilariously fakey crying I've ever heard. That's just blowing a raspberry in your face with crap directing/adaptation. And that's just one example of many. I haven't even finished the show in dub because I kept pausing to groan. X_X Even in series where you don't particularly have to care about acting or nuance or decent writing and the audience would probably welcome added jokes, like Samurai Girls, he went the extra mile and filled the damn script with awkward grammatical errors that the actresses SPOKE ALOUD and they kept it in the final--I MEAN WHAT THE F--. Okay, I'm done bitching, but this REALLY hacks me off, clearly. (This is apparently a recent problem. I NEVER used to hear bizarre grammatical errors spoken in dubs. Awkward syntax yes, but not errors so bad MS Word would point them out to you and anyone saying them aloud completely breaks your suspension of disbelief. But yeah, that was in Samurai Girls, AND Angel Beats, and not just Foster dubs, it was all over Vampire Knight too, one of the worst dubs I've probably heard in five years or so.) I prefer the bad dubs of the 90s where the script was super-faithful to a fault, everyone spoke in passive voice, and they sounded really over-the-top and dopey, because you know, they were just copying everyone else's standard and trying to get the work out quickly. Depending on the show, a lot of those were still enjoyable to watch. Considering the standard of everyone around him: NYAV Post, Bang Zoom, Funimation, even Ocean, Foster just sounds like he's being paid to wave it in our faces that he doesn't care and every character should sound like a smarmy douche-canoe with bad grammar and no appreciation for tone, character voice, or the type of material he's given. And because it sounds "natural" to some listeners, a lot of them are giving him a pass, but I think it's absolute bollocks, and the fact that "ICE is a bad show and probably deserves to be torn apart hurr hurr" just kinda makes me angrier in light of all that. Grr. |

Chris Patton has been back for a while, at least at Sentai. He was the lead in Demon King Daimao and voiced minor roles in a few other Sentai shows. I'm wondering too if this might be a gag dub, but considering what I've heard about the quality of the show that might be a good thing. I guess we will have to wait and see. To Jesu, I've also noticed a downward trend in dubs the past two years or so. I think a lot of it may have to do with the move to box sets over singles. Now places like Seraphim and Funimation have to dub 13 or 26 episodes in the same amount of time they use to dub 3 or 4. I remember listening to commentaries where actors talked about being kept up all night working on just one or two lines. Sadly, ADR studios don't have the time or money to do that anymore. They also have a lot less staffing to work with, so mistakes are more likely to slip through. Of course, you also have to remember that everyone has different tastes in dubs. I loved the Angel Beats dub and it's one of my favorites in the past year. |

I also have noticed a huge rise in grammatical/bizarre errors in recent English dubs. Heck, when I got the Angel Beats DVD, I wanted to hear what the dub sounded like, so I popped in the 'Stairway to Heaven' (High tension!) OVA. One of the first sentences I was greeted with was, "Hey Otonashi, do you want to play catch ball?"
How does that make it past the editor and/or quality check? That's just downright laziness of taking the Japanese kechubooru (or whatever) and translating it exactly, instead of the obvious "catch". And whoever voiced Shiina didn't do well at all with one of my favorite scenes from that OVA |

Personally I didn't care for the OVA at all, but I think that had a lot to do with it playing immediately after the incredible final episode. But that line was really my only major problem with the dub. However, since the OVA was so absurd it didn't bother me too much. As for quality control, well, there is very little of it these days. Most of the anime distributors and ADR studios have had several rounds of layoffs in the past few years. |

On the one hand, I understand. But on the other, I'm pretty sure it takes more effort rather than less to create a very unfaithful script that sounds awkward instead of the more common "exact to the Japanese" awkward-sounding script. Watch a Foster dub with the subs on: he changes whatever he can in places, and it sounds WORSE. Then occasionally something will be direct-to-the-subs and you can tell it's because he didn't really get what was going on, so he left it alone, and that sounds bad *too.* And again, with rare exception, I'm not hearing this ugly quality dropoff from other studios. Not consistently like I'm hearing from Foster. "Rushed out," to me, sounds like a lot of stuff from the late 90s, the real campy, stilted dubs. Foster's stuff REALLY DOES sound like he put time and effort into annoying the viewers with his bad jokes and mockery of serious scenes. I can handle "rushed out," I can handle "cartoony." I'm a dub fan, I'm fairly tolerant of such things. What I CAN'T handle is "Didn't care, decided to goof off and try to prove I'm more fun than this actual show is," and that's what he gives us. I don't like someone waving their dirty laundry in my face while I'm trying to follow a story. I'm glad you enjoyed the Angel Beats dub. A lot of people are telling me they did. All I hear in it is a bunch of snarky teenagers (even the characters who are not snarky, which is a lot of them,) mouthing off until a serious moment comes, wherein Foster will cheapen it with bad accents, stupid phrases like "sick with the cancer," or wink-wink-ha-ha-it's-a-melodrama-get-it hammy acting. Also, his script is confusing as hell. ~But that's just meee~ ^^; |

Like I said, everyone has different tastes. One of Foster's strong points for me has always been casting. As long as the characters are cast well, I can forgive scripting issues, especially ones that don't bother me, and other problems. I thought Angel Beats was very well cast and I thought they all did an excellent job, particularly the two leads. I will gladly take that over a flawless dub that no one point any thought into casting. I've actually noted a much bigger drop off in quality from Funimation than from Sentai, especially how long Houston went without doing a new dub. Some of Funi's dubs in the past two years seemed like they just threw darts at a board for the cast. They use to be one of my favorite dubbing studios, but much of their recent work has actually made me switch to subs (something I NEVER do.) For instance, I don't know what they were thinking with the casting for Black Butler. It sounded like an amateur fandub to me, and made me wish that Netflix had a language option. |

I think that there might be a couple of factors playing into the rush dub jobs that we are seeing coming from Funimation and Sentai.
They probably want to get the series out to fans as fast as possible before interest in the series drops for something new. Plus with companies such as Aniplex and NIS releasing sub only titles within months of announcing that they have licensed them, has put pressure on those companies that has always done dubs to get titles out as quickly as possible (with or without a decent dub track) to meet the demands of fans. Plus with the poor economy, they are also competing against those who don't have the extra money to put out for anime and would just as well illegally download a series that has been announced as licensed then to wait for them to put a decent dub track to it. Granted I haven't been to pleased with the state of anime dubbing as of late but I would rather pay $40.00 for a series with a bilingual track then to pay $40.00 for a series that was released as sub only. |
