Match B-29: Harlock
I don't think Balsa is unanimous, and I just can't imagine her winning a Cool Tournament. I don't know much about Harlock, but if he's here despite having faced quite a few prominent characters. Match B-30: Kenshiro Revy's supporters disappeared. Or rather, she never had many supporters... it's more like Kenshiro had too many opponents. This is a weak match because coolness wise Revy is super weak, and Eboshi is a pile of ideals who is a strong willed woman, but not cool. Kenshiro isn't that cool either, but at least badassery wise he gets the edge. So yeah, Kenshiro for being more of a badass and cooler. B-31 (if I get this right) is as good as decided, so bleh. I really considered skipping this round, but since my vote won't affect the outcome it becomes rather entertaining and open to unopposed insults towards a few characters I'm not quite fond of. |

Well, I really think that her opponents are weak and Eboshi is simply the best choice in B-30. |

Missed the paragraph about weighing in on whether we should scrap the tournament. As the administrator of the minigame, I'm a little hesitant to weigh in (although I doubt there would be a difference in the top 3 whether we go the distance or cut off early).
I've got a few other things to say, but they might be best left until the post-mortem, lest I distract from the main purpose of the thread. |

Group B-29
Captain Harlock, various (see Guide entry) vs. Balsa, Moribito – Guardian of the Spirit Captain Harlock is pretty cool, and an excellent badass infact, but Balsa is a top contender here. She should easily win the group. This late in the game tough decisions have to be made... Group B-30 Lady Eboshi, Princess Mononoke vs. Revy, Black Lagoon vs. Kenshiro, Fist of the North Star Not gonna vote for Kenshiro, he really is a one trick pony. I can understand people's arguments against Revy, and I'm afraid I'm going to have to agree with them. She is a cool badass, but there are moments where she really shows great weakness. By default I'm voting for Lady Eboshi. She should not win next round... |

Can I suggest in future tournaments, where it's required to write up an explanation, if you are going to vote for a character your reasoning must at least somewhere say something IN SUPPORT of that character?
As in no more "by default" votes. Right now we have at least 2 "by default" votes for Lady Eboshi and one invalid vote for Lady Eboshi. If this was in effect now Kenshiro would be ahead by one vote, yay! |

I am irritated by this, too. In the future simply saying that will not be sufficient reasoning. We have about 80 minutes left in the round as I write this and only a dozen votes in? Barring a dramatic change, this will be, by far, the lowest vote total we've ever had. (And B-30 is close enough that its outcome is not a forgone conclusion, BTW.) |

Group B-29
Captain Harlock, various (see Guide entry) vs. Balsa, Moribito – Guardian of the Spirit Voting for: Balsa Harlock's style still impresses me more, personally speaking, but Balsa isn't exactly too far behind and adds a better characterization to the rest of her own significant credentials as a badass. She's more versatile and that, in this particular case, does make her cooler . Group B-30 Lady Eboshi, Princess Mononoke vs. Revy, Black Lagoon vs. Kenshiro, Fist of the North Star Voting for: Lady Eboshi Aside from perhaps one early round in particular, where I did vote against her and still don't regret doing so, I've generally been more than content to support Lady Eboshi against the rest of her opponents. Unfortunately, this is about to change...well, sooner rather than later but not right now. I can no longer see myself endorsing Kenshiro either, unless my preferences moved from cool to badass as a general rule, so Revy is all that's left and she doesn't exactly meet the challenge in either category despite her own merits, lacking both Kenshiro's over-the-top brutality and the same kind of self-confident presence that Lady Eboshi easily transmits to the viewer. One of the underlying factors that works in Lady Eboshi's favor, to put it simply, is that she did more with her comparatively limited screen time than what either of these two were able to accomplish within the respective running lengths of each of their series. However, I have to admit that you can only stretch such an argument so far and it's definitely coming close to the breaking point, at least from my point of view, given the remaining challengers she's likely to face from now on. |

Whoa. I thought there were a few more days. And I haven't given ccdx any more video ideas for the Count. Yikes.
Group B-29 Captain Harlock, various (see Guide entry) vs. Balsa, Moribito – Guardian of the Spirit Two quite interesting candidates. I've not seen either series but this tournament had definitely got me interested in getting hold of Moribito when the complete series becomes available. I'll go for Balsa because she's female and I find female characters inherently more cool than male characters. Group B-30 Lady Eboshi, Princess Mononoke vs. Revy, Black Lagoon vs. Kenshiro, Fist of the North Star I'm voting for Lady Eboshi because she's intriguingly ambiguous. She has a strong sense of justice, she cares for people genuinely, she has tremendous stores of determination, yet she will take advantage of people to achieve her goals and she won't let the natural world stand in her way (until the very end, that is). She has a refreshing capacity for change as shown when she vows to build a new but different Iron Town based on the lessons she has learnt. In this yin and yang tale, Eboshi represents everything that is valuable about civilisation and, in particular, city life as opposed to San who represents the wilderness, with its freedom and dangers. Kenshiro is a boring jock even if he is a good bloke at heart while Revy - well, I just suggest people re-watch the scene where she slaughters the Nazis: that's not cool or bad-ass; it's sickening. On top of that she has a pathetic streak that undermines her bad-assery. Last edited by Errinundra on Mon Apr 18, 2011 10:08 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I'm glad that you are at least a bit supportive of my suggestion, Key. I PM'd Lydia for her to address her vote so we don't have to squabble whether it's valid or not. Hopefully she see's my PM before the time's up. Suppose I can't do anything else about the "defaults" other than add my vote in support of Kenshiro.

Was busy and distracted lately and didn't vote in a lot of the matches, let's see if I can slip in in time for this one. Short on time, so my reasons will be typed pretty quickly and perhaps not as well worded as I'd like.
Group B-29 Captain Harlock, various (see Guide entry) vs. Balsa, Moribito – Guardian of the Spirit My vote: Balsa Well, Balsa is both cool and bad-ass. She's an awesome fighter, for one thing. Has a bit of a sense of humor. And, more than anything, she has the perfect attitude for this tournament, incredibly bad-ass and rightfully confident in her abilities, but lacking the immature arrogance that some of the other bad-ass characters in this tournament have. Group B-30 Lady Eboshi, Princess Mononoke vs. Revy, Black Lagoon vs. Kenshiro, Fist of the North Star My vote: Lady Eboshi Well, I haven't seen either Kenshiro's or Revy's shows, but from what I understand, Kenshiro is a bit of a one dimensional classic bad-ass, who lacks something of a more refined cool style, and Revy is a bit psychotic. Lady Eboshi is the "villian" of Princess Mononoke, but you find yourself wanting to root for her anyways, and not just because she's revealed to have done many good things for her people. She has a certain style and poise to her that she keeps even in extreme situations. |

Okay, now I never put down "by default" on my Lady E. vote. What I put down was that because of previous arguments both for and against her is the reason I chose her. I just got home and did receive your pm and then read this thread. And, again, because of previous arguments and the ones made today, I am sticking with Lady E. I am going back to my vote and adding a little more to it so that it will be sufficent. |

Round 4 Group B is now closed.
With a record-low 15 votes, the results: B-29: Balsa thrashed Captain Harlock, 13-2. B-30: Lady Eboshi took out both Kenshiro and Revy, 10-4-1. Both matches were more blow-outs than I would have expected, though the winners aren't. In any case, the next round will be up as quick as I can post it. |

Round 4 Group C is now closed.
See here for results. I have given up trying to pick which matches will be blow-outs and which will be close, as I seem to have a poor track record on that. Let’s just see how these turn out: Group C-29 Letopanyu Spoor, Crest/Banner of the Stars franchise vs. The Count, Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo Group C-30 Akira Tokizawa Eden of the East vs. November 11, Darker Than BLACK Last edited by Key on Mon Apr 25, 2011 11:08 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I never even voted this (last) round, but I'll remedy that by voting in this round now. Group C-29 Letopanyu Spoor, Crest/Banner of the Stars franchise vs. The Count, Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo Pick: Letopanyu Spoor: throughout this tournament I've been intrigued by Spoor's character. Her attitude and philosophy. It strikes me as most intriguing. A feel that there has been an inordinate amount of support for such a minor character versus the main, titular character that is her opponent. And I think this support will take her far this round. The Count has style going for him, but I think it is part of an advantage simply by being in the right place at the right time. One can seem cool and play the part, but is he simply lucky, wealthy, manipulative or fortunate to have friends in high places? Spoor's coolness comes from her quick resolve and temperament, and I believe that shines through greatly. Group C-30 Akira Tokizawa Eden of the East vs. November 11, Darker Than BLACK[/quote] Pick: November 11 - such a suave guy with lots of tricks up his sleeve. Being cool means knowing your surroundings well and being confident in your own abilities. Akira has it together too, but even after a watching of all of Eden of the East recently he is rather ordinary. I don't see how someone only moderately cool and overall quite average could go this far in the tournament. Again luck played on his side (less popular contenders in previous rounds) and I'm saying luck does not equal cool.
