It seems to me most of those theaters are either in a University or next to one.
Are University students (college geeks?) the main audience Oshii was after? From the movie message board:
Considering the wide release of Hero and its relative success, it is a shame the movie could not be released the same manner. |

We can't blame Oshii-san for where the movie ends up. The distributor decides on that. In my area (Phoenix AZ), they're staying true to genre with two theatres near ASU and one cineplex that specializes in foreign films.

I don't blame him in the least. Yet, I have a theatre nearby me that usually shows indie and foreign films, and they're not running it...

You mean a release delayed for 2 years with 20 minutes cut out, sub-titles Americanized, and Quentin Tarantino given producer credit, even though he had nothing to do with creation of the film? Anyway, at least Innocence is getting more promotion and distribution than Millennium Actress. |

Yeah, actually I would. "All Under the Heaven" is a little bit more meaningful than "Our Land".

Eh... I'm not in agreement there. Our land really fits the story so much more than "All under the heaven". The meaning is still there, the unification of China.

While we're at it, why not movies based on Shakespeare plays in high school settings?! Oh wait, we did. That explains your indifference. Anyway, when they say uncut, they should mean it.

Hero is live-action, which makes it much easier for the mass non-child audience to swallow. And it was successful because there was little in the way of competition on two extremely weak weekends. Last edited by Tenchi on Wed Sep 15, 2004 4:18 pm; edited 1 time in total |

It wasn't cut(for once) There is a "director's cut" out there, but I'm not going to split hairs with Miramax, it's actually 3min longer than the Chinese theatrical cut, and only about 10min shorter than the extended I am their biggest critic, but they did Hero mostly right. I will buy their DVD of it, as I did with Shaolin Soccer and publically encourage others to do the same. It's the only way to get them to change their ways.[/quote] |

Oh yeah, and let's not forget the "love" that Disney and Miramaxe showed for Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. I'd rather Innocence get a weak screen count by a company that's willing to take a chance on different types of animation and Asian films than by two companies which only buy up animated and Asian films, so the competition doesn't get to them first.
