I don't know if I'm sort of biased since I really like dubs, but I kind of get strayed away of some anime releases that only has sub versions. For example, I heard that Millenium Actress is a very good movie and should be seen by lots of people, but I got sort of disappointed when GoFish decided not to dub it. From what I heard, Gofish treated this movie as a foreign film so everyone can watch it in its authentic language without being altered. Well, I recently saw the movie a few days ago, and it was really good. Though I sort of wondered what the movie would be like if it was dubbed.

Yea, its kinda anoying since I too prefer dubs the majority of the time. I was hoping Arcadia of My Youth would get a new dub to replaced that craptastic 80's one, but they didn't. Still picked up the DVD though and enjoyed it, although I would've probably enjoyed it more without speed-reading my tv.

The Mobile Suit Gundam movie trilogy on DVD is also sub only, but I think I heard there's a dub for them on VHS (if any of this matters...).

Instead of doing an uncut dub like they did with Saint Seiya, ADV decided to do a sub-only dvd for Sailor moon. Geneon also did a sub-only dvd for CCS but they did dub the second movie. It's a good thing that 4kids and Funimation decided to do a new dub of Yu-gi-oh and Shaman King instead of making a sub-only release.

Yeah, Millenium Actress being sub-only was disappointing as I know some non-anime people would like it but are turned off by the subtitles. Also, Tokyo Godfathers is sub-only, double disappointment.

Yeah, I really liked Milennium Actress, too, but no one else in my family wanted to watch it because it only had subtitles. That's okay with me, since it's what I prefer, but like J-Syxx said, a lot of folks don't like to read TV.
I suppose that depending on the profile of the release (Wolf's Rain versus, say, Spring and Chaos), the quality of the dub could vary greatly. Less popular or less well-known shows could get less popular or less well-known VAs and directors, thus leading to a low-quality dub. That'd probably just tick off the original Japanese cast and crew, so maybe the N. American companies decide it's not worth the extra expense. I'm just guessin', tho. |

Millenium Actress Was good, but I would too like to know what it would be like dubbed. And Sailor Moon Uncut should have been redubbed by ADV like Saint Seiya, but Oh well.

It seems like older shows are the ones to be neglected with dubs. Liking dubs doesn't mean you aren't a hardcore fan. The Mobile Suit Gundam condensed movies' had a pretty crappy dub, but I did like the Bright Noah with his British accent. The guy who did his voice for the tv series really can't compare, but overall the dub was crappy. Sayla's voice was horrible, they tried to give her a Spanish accent and it just completely failed. I think Lucas portrayed Char, but I actually prefer the Char from the tv show.

I guess sub-only releases can help you guys appreciate dubs more. If you like the stuff, shouldn't you not mind having to read the screen every now and then? Plus, I think it's good enough that Dreamworks is releasing it in theatres, at all.

I don't want to sound like a sub elitist (I do prefer some anime dubbed), but is it really that hard? I watch a lot of foreign films so reading subtitles is second nature to me, but unless its something fast like Kare Kano or FLCL, it doesn't seem like it should be that much of a problem.

It takes much more energy and focus. You can half listen to a dub and understand what is going on. Try half reading and see how that works. In the end, Anime is entertainment. Some of us have stressful jobs and studies that use up our brain power and want to relax. Subs are usually fine for me, but with a real hard day it is hard to watch.

With Sailor Moon, I believe the only English dub available was the edited version. ADV's sub-only version was also completely un-cut. SM hadn't had an uncut/unedited release in the U.S. before. It was also probably targeted mostly toward hard-core Sailor Moon fans. |

It sounds like they had a similar deal as AnimeEgo and Macross where they could get a separate license for the fans and put out a spendy, but nice product.

No, subs are not hard to read, and I watched subbed anime often. Still, I want to be given the option of which way I want to watch my anime. Most everything I own I end up seeing both versions so I can enjoy it both ways. edit: spelling |

IMO, I don't think it was the creator's intention to have you read their shows and listen to a language you don't comprehend while you watch it. For that reason alone, which is more true to the creator's intentions is completely up to debate, if the dub is accurate that is. As mentioned earlier, I too can't really relax when I'm reading my tv. I like to be relaxed when I view my entertainment. Not that I put my brain to sleep or anything like that, but not having to quickly juggle the tasks of watching and reading at the same time constantly is alot easier.
