Yeah, really old news which has been under the radar for a while now. The French must've heard about Dreamworks live-action film, and wanted to corner the market first. This isn't the first Cagliostro or Lupin adaptation, but it's the newest. I dunno if I could consider http://www.chez.com/filmoduris/ a decent Lupin, but I'm waiting for a trailer. What do you guys mean by "prequel"? Is it a prequel to something within the Maurice Leblanc canon because I don't think this really has anything whatsoever to do with Hayao Miyazaki's Castle of Cagliostro movie or Monkey Punch's Lupin III manga (and the anime adaptation) in general other than being a direct adaptation of what inspired Monkey Punch in the first place.

Maurice Leblanc wrote several Arsene Lupin books. In the first one, Arsene was already an established thief, one of the most wanted thieves in the world. One of the subsequent novels, "La Comptesse de Cagliostro," took place when Arsene was young, when he was 20 and before he changed his name to Arsene Lupin. It was his encouter with the countess that affected his life in such a way that he became Arsene Lupin, the gentleman thief. Therefore, it's a prequel.
I never said, or implied anything about it being a prequel to Castle of Cagliostro. The upcoming movie, although called "Arsene Lupin" is actually an adaptation of that specific "episode" of Arsene Lupin. |

Yeah, I thought it was probably something like that, I just didn't want people not aware of the original Lupin thinking this was some sort of live-action prequel to Castle of Cagliostro when the relation is only indirect, because, you know, a lot of people half-read articles and jump to conclusions and there will be some anime fans who will say, "Who the hell is Maurice Leblanc? Monkey Punch created Lupin! This is such a rip-off of Castle of Cagliostro, they didn't even bother to change the names of some of the characters or the place!"

Yes, I know. I was saying what I think some other people totally unfamiliar with the fact that there was a gentleman thief character named "Lupin" around prior to the Monkey Punch manga might say. That's why I put quotation marks.
Not that I've ever read Leblanc myself, but I've seen a handful of the TV adaptations. |

Wait a second... Dreamworks is making a live action Lupin the 3rd? Wow, now I'm happy. But was there an official statement or is it just speculation. I forget if it was James Cameron or Steven Spielberg that said the "I would love to make a live action Lupin. I hope it's true, I can't wait to here about the cast, heres who I think should get the roles. It's true that there is a live-action Lupin III in some early stage of preproduction at Dreamworks, however, there are a lot of films that aren't Lupin III in some early stage of preproduction at Dreamworks, and not all of them will ever make it out of preproduction, so, for now, it's just "we'll see".
From what I understand, the live-action Tintin which Spielberg wants to either produce or direct, is much further along in preproduction and more likely to go into production, and this would likely put live-action Lupin III on ice for a while, since, while the lead characters are different (one's a gentleman thief while the other is a young reporter), they would be comic-based globetrotting adventures, possibly set during the middle of the twentieth century (a decade or two earlier for Tintin, I know), very similar in tone. And both of those would probably be, in turn, put on ice if Spielberg decides to go ahead with Indiana Jones 4. Spielberg has a couple of items on his plate as director right now, so, if he does direct any of these, they wouldn't be out for several years. As for "dream casts"... having Carrey and Depp and Hanks and Diaz alone would cost in the range of $60-80 million, since they're all very A-list. As for Duris, I remember this old thread at Rotten Tomatoes with a great pic of Duris at Cannes looking very Lupin-like, and, sure enough, he did play Lupin but I (Kiyone at RT) was correct after all, that he would play the original Lupin and not the Monkey Punch character. Yes but, Dreamworks is more than able to compensate for them, considering who directs it and how big a budget they wanna make it, alot of those actors are Dreamworks regulars as well.... But it IS just a dreamcast... Whoa, I feel like playing Shenmue now... I wonder why? |

Well, Dreamworks COULD probably pay them. But one of the reasons they licensed the property in general was, apparently, how fast and cheap the film could be produced. 60-80 million's real steep for a niche property like Lupin III. I'd guess more towards 20-40 mil. |
