Although is also doesn't tlak about anime, the science channel had a show on the other day detailing real life inventions adapted from sci-fi.

It's important to note that it's the creator's job to create a world/environment/setting that will draw in an aduience and make the audience believe that certain things are plausable. It is too easy for us to look ahead an envision a terrible future when we are surrounded by wars, famines, and disasters. Nobody knows how the future will turn out to be. It may be a vry peaceful world where everyone loves everyone... who knws. As long as we can believe the world of the anime then that is all that matters.

Did you see the movie Serenity? A peaceful planet was tried via drugs in the water or the air. spoiler[90% of the people became sooo peaceful they literally laid down and died where they were...the other 10% became the Reavers and went around raping, eating people then killing them. Also, if you consider sci-fi anime to be comparable to sci-fi in general, it isn't really to predict the future. If you've ever read Le Guin's The Lefthand of Darkness, she writes a really interesting intro about how sci-fi is more about addressing today. Lol, sorry Iwent a bit of topic, but I do like my sci-fi.

Left Hand and Dispossessed are a little more alegorical than I like my stories to be. Indeed, she iss not telling us a story about what will happen in our (specific) future, as much as she is setting up a fantastical situation to tell a socialogical situation. Shows like Hokuto no Ken 199X and Macross have the charm of presenting us with a future that we could witness in a few years. I remember having a mini marathon of Hokuto no Ken episodes on December 31st 1989. I love the song Tough Boy especially the "we're still fightring, fighting in the 90s" part. The only other show that we have surpassed that I can think of is SPT Layzner. I believe the year is 1996 when Mars Base is invaded. The second half of the series takes place in 1999. There was also that terrible film Future War 198X that comes to mind. The list will only get longer as we pass 2012, 2023 and beyond. |

As much as I hate the post compeltely changing directions thanks to some people who want to talk about their American sci-fi shows... I think this is an interesting topic as well.
I wonder how many anime have "futuristic" dates that have already passed. The only ones I could think of was Robotech Macross Saga, and someone already mentioned that. Was Akira 2032? Maybe I'll post more then. |

Well, Macross sure got it wrong. If the alien spacecraft did indeed land in 1999, then it is being restored as we speak and is scheduled to be launched in less than three years.
 I will be stocking up on supplies to get me through the imminent Zentradi attack. As much as I would like to see some of the things shown in Bubblegum Crisis come to life, I doubt that anything like boomers will be commonplace by the year 2032...or 2027 if you go by AD Police Files. The Ghost in the Shell movies present somewhat more realistic scenarios, but I doubt that they will come to pass in their timelines either.

Patlabor is based in the late 1990's-early 2000's, so I don't see the Jeitai nor the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department (ref. Patlabor 2: the Movie) or the NYPD (ref. Patlabor the Movie) using Labors.
