Just a heads up for anyone considering seeing it at the Landmark in Cambridge, MA; when I went last Friday (the 5th) they were showing the subtitled version with no indication on the website that they weren't showing the dub. I don't know if that was just a one-off thing or if it's all shows, so be careful if you or someone you're going with needs the dub.

Does this mean they're successful? I'm looking at the numbers and it looks good to me, but I don't know if it's good to the movie companies or theaters. I hope it's going well. Wish they'd show this movie in my city!

Does anyone know if they are offering showings of both sub and dub at theaters? I've been hesitant to go, since it's quite a drive and I'm only willing if the subtitled print is an option. Heck, has anyone HEARD the dub? Is it good? I've heard no feedback about it, and if it's a halfway decent effort, I just might go for it!

I have a spoilery question about one part of the translation:
When the song "Ue wo Muite Arukou" plays during the bicycling scene, do they translate the original lyrics, or use the old "Sukiyaki" lyrics that were a hit on US radio (twice)? Much as I'd like American audience to finally learn what that song really says, an argument could probably be made for the Sukiyaki version as well, due to the movie's nostalgia factor.

AFAIK, they didn't translate.

Ah, thanks. The song is very famous, so maybe there were insurmountable money/licensing issues.

If that were the problem, they wouldn't have been able to use the song at all. It's likely they just didn't translate and subtitle it. It's fairly common for foreign films from many companies to leave song lyrics untranslated.

The dub was better than I expected from the brief clips I saw in previews.
There were a few scenes that felt a bit flat and I would have rather watched it in Japanese but overall I thought it was a enjoyable dub.
I also enjoyed the movie more than I thought based on reviews. I loved the historical aspect and it did remind me of the feel of Only Yesterday.
I also went with a friend who is only casually into anime and she really liked it (even more than me).

That's a ringing endorsement for me. I'm usually very leery of dubs but have enjoyed some of the Disney produced ones in the past, so I was a little stumped about the fact that this was a GKids release, and thus an "unknown" company to me. My plans for this weekend fell through, but I'll try and catch a later showing if possible. If all else fails, it sounds like the home release isn't too far off.
I've heard many critics complain about this one because of its grounded realism and lack of fanciful setting/story (*sarcasm mode* like this is a first for Ghibli!), and Goro's fault, which shows their ignorance to the whole Ghibli catalog. One of my favorites is Whisper of the Heart, a "slower" Ghibli film that is nonetheless enchanting, so I'm hoping Poppy Hill's a gem like that one~
