As sports series go, Hanebado! is a grade above. It takes a sport that isn't one of the major ones and makes it interesting without resorting to outlandish gimmickry, while at the same time supporting it with mildly compelling character drama and respectable action animation. A few big hurdles keep it from being a top-tier series, but it is more watchable than you might expect.

Of all of the anime titles that I have seen in recent years, few have cried out as loudly to be marathoned as this Winter 2020 series does. That is not because the series is so fiercely compelling (although it can be at times) or flows along so swiftly, but rather because its mind-bending structure and plot progression require intense, continuous concentration to sort out what is really going on. For better or worse, this is not light viewing.

In the end, Josee, The Tiger and the Fish is a beautifully animated film about the struggles of the physically-disabled and the mindset needed to obtain your dreams. While it is a bit predictable and cliché in parts, the way it portrays the world Josee lives in gives us all a peek into what it's like to live in a world not designed for us while also highlighting the importance of personal independence to the human soul.
