6 Times Mother Nature Unleashed Her Fury

by Lynzee Loveridge,

Nature has an unlimited arsenal of weapons at its disposal. There are the Biblical classics like swarms of insects and disease, followed by tornadoes, hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes, floods, snow storms, the list goes on. Mother Nature can wipe you out with extreme heat or cold, invasions that are microscopic and storms that are insurmountable. Nothing can make humanity feel smaller than its inability to control anything nature decides to pull on us.

6. Jyu-Oh-Sei When kid twins Thor and Rai are forced onto the prison planet Chimaera, they quickly learn that if the criminals won't kill them, the walking, man-eating plants will. The planet itself is mostly devoid of obtainable water except what can be gathered from plants. The most useful blooms emit toxic sap. The seasons and day rotations on Chimaera are equally extreme. Each Chimaeran day is equal to 181 Earth days followed by an equally long night.

5. Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet By all means it looks like humanity adapted well to its new watery home planet. Communities live productive lives on conjoined boat colonies. In reality, the mankind's current lifestyle is the result of a fifth ice age. The climate change was so catastrophic, it split humanity into opposing ideological factions on how best to adapt to their changing environment. Both mostly retreated into space where they continue to wage war against one another.

4. Princess Mononoke Ghibli's film about human progress versus nature gives one perspective on how the Earth fights back. Lady Eboshi continues to clear sections of the forest to fuel Irontown and its products despite the effects it has on the spirits, like the Boar Gods and the Wolf God Moro. She plans to overtake the Great Forest Spirit but in doing so, taints him. Everything the spirit touches is laid to waste, and forest Gods infiltrate and attack the city. Moro takes Eboshi's arm as retribution.

3. A Spirit of The Sun The manga is another disaster story taking place in the near future. After massive earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, Japan is literally ripped in half. Millions are dead from the resulting devastation and the country's economy relies on foreign-aid-turned-occupying-forces: China and America. A boy named Genichiro holds on to his optimism despite Mother Nature's attacks on his home country. The manga was adapted into a two-episode special taking place when Genichiro is older and focusing on the politics of native Taiwanese and the influx of Japanese refugees due to the disaster.

2. Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 The eerily ominous disaster series was created by BONES in 2009 under the premise that there was a 70% a 7.0 earthquake would strike Tokyo. While the series was set in 2012, The Great Eastern Japan Earthquake with a magnitude of 9.0 struck the Tōhoku region of Japan in 2011, shifting the entire island of Honshu eight feet east. Tokyo Magnitude tackles the aftermath by following its two child leads, as they and the rest of the affected citizens try to find shelter, food, and care for the ill.

1. Now and Then, Here and There Usually when you think of a horrible natural disaster, it's a destructive force like an earthquake, tsunami, tornado, or other type of storm. Now and Then, Here and There instead depicts a world lacking weather. The planet is instead struck by uncompromising drought leaving little water for the surviving human population. Wars are waged over water access and everyone operates on a hair trigger from the uncompromising heat.
