The Click
June 9 - 15
by Brian Hanson,
Man, what's going on? I go away for just one week, and everything has all gone bugaboo! There are two new channels airing anime for adults, and one that's showing subtitled-only episodes of forgotten classics that have otherwise never seen the light of day in America! It's like they're trying to improve things! Because as we all well know, Adult Swim and other anime companies derive their dark, satanic powers from the tears and discordant, angry forum posts of fraught anime fans. Think of the impact this will have on salaried, well-employed TV executives! Not to mention the extra text required on the part of certain humble, in-no-way-alcoholic TV anime columnists! Criminey.
Since there's so much to go over this week, I'll forgo my usual long-winded, usually blasphemous introductions. Suffice to say that this is The Click, there are anime on TV shows below, all times and dates are Eastern and tentative, et cetera.
Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society
(Sci Fi Channel)
Monday June 11 11:00pm
A big round of applause, folks, for Sci Fi Channel! How long they've come, it seems; not too many years ago, I remember the internet fanboy anger and rage over the lackluster treatment given to anime they used to air as part of their Saturday anime block, wherein heavily-edited versions of Galaxy Express 999 and the Fatal Fury anime were prevalent, and a ditzy blond bimbo provided color commentary with all the cultural and artistic sensitivity of a Carrot Top performance. With their past mistakes behind them, Sci Fi is eager to rein in on Adult Swim's modest, yet sincere, corner on the late-night-anime TV racket, and are doing so with aplomb. We're given a special treat this week with a special preview of the Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society "movie," which basically crams the "Laughing Man" plot of the first Ghost in the Shell TV series with some new animation here and there. But hey, new Ghost in the Shell animation, in any form, is difficult to pass up, so everybody beam their ocular cavities to Sci Fi this Monday for some meditative yet explosive cyborg action!
PREMIERES:
Basilisk
(Independent Film Channel)
Friday June 15 11:30pm - Episode 24 "Requiem" (Repeats Sat June 16 4:55am)
It's the Basilisk season finale, and with it, will Gennosuke and Oboro reconcile the past 23 episodes or so of brutal ninja violence and betrayal to settle down and have a peaceful, ninja-attack-free domestic partnership? A show wherein ninjas trade their throwing stars and smoke bombs for aprons and Ikea products doesn't quite have the same "zing" to it, though.
Bleach
(Adult Swim)
Sunday June 10 12:00am - Episode 36 (Repeats Sun June 10 3:00am)
After barely surviving his last kerfluffle with Renji, Ichigo preps to do battle with one of the strongest of the Soul Society: Captain Zaraki Kenpachi. Swords will fly, crimson will flow, sentences will be ended!
(YTV)
Friday June 15 10:30pm - Episode 29 (Repeats Sat June 16 2:00am)
At least I think it'll be episode 29 this week on YTV. According to my super-secret sources, anyway. If it is indeed episode 29, watch as Uryu protects the erstwhile Orihime, and Ichigo and Ganju capture a misbegotten hostage to escape the Soul Society entourage! And if it isn't, well. Punch your TV or something.
Blood+
(Adult Swim)
Sunday June 10 12:30am - Episode 12 "Lured by the White Mist" (Repeats Sun June 10 3:30am)
If there's one thing to make the Vietnam war seem like something other than a sobering reminder of the dangers of militarism, perhaps its vampires? This week on Blood+, Saya and the others head up the Mekong river to recover their kidnapped schoolmates, and fight vampires and such along the way.
Bobobo-bo Bo-Bobo
(Cartoon Network)
Saturday June 9 10:00pm - Episode 61 "United We Stand, Divided We Also Stand, Just Further Apart"
Facing a powerful new enemy, Bo-bobo relies on the help of two powerful old allies. That's right, film critics Paulene Kael and Gene Shalit!
Cat's Eye
(ImaginAsianTV)
-Monday June 11 9:30am - Episode 3 "Watch the Troublesome Devil" (Repeats Tue June 12 5:30am)
-Tuesday June 12 9:30am - Episode 4 "Paris-Like Aggressor" (Repeats Wed June 13 5:30am)
-Wednesday June 13 9:30am - Episode 5 "Night Flying With Dangerous Perfume" (Repeats Thu June 14 5:30am)
-Thursday June 14 9:30am - Episode 6 "Feels Like Love, a Little Bit" (Repeats Fri June 15 5:30am)
-Friday June 15 9:30am - Episode 7 "Splendid Love Message" (Repeats Sat June 16 5:30am)
For how long have the grown men and women who happen to call themselves fans of honest-to-god "Japanese Animation" with no small amount of trepidation been calling for those forgotten classics of this much-maligned medium to be released, properly, in English? Instead of more "harem" show retreads, brain-dead high-school comedies, and soulless Naruto wannabes, this is what I'd like to see more of. From the fertile mind of City Hunter creator Tsukasa Hojo, comes this amusingly quaint yet sophisticated romp featuring three sisters running a high-class art thievery ring under the guise of their seemingly normal "Cat's Eye" cafe.
Cowboy Bebop
(Razer)
Sunday June 10 9:00pm - Episode 25 "The Real Folk Blues, Part 1"
What a glorious final two-episodes Cowboy Bebop has. I'm seriously envious for those Canadian viewers who get to see this for the first time, as it's possibly the most perfect and fitting finale to any series I've ever seen - action-packed, heartfelt, and wraps up enough loose ends while leaving some lingering questions to leave the viewer angrily demanding more, MORE! Watch as Spike, Jet, and the rest confront the last vestiges of their sad former selves, as well as the deadly consequences therein.
Elemental Gelade
(ImaginAsianTV)
Tuesday June 12 5:00pm - Episode 20 "Viro" (Repeats Tue June 12 8:00pm, Wed June 13 12:30am, 12:00pm)
Uh-oh, is it splitsville for our favorite sky-pirate and his mystical "Edel Reid" beau? Probably not, but those and other ill-conceived plot twists, alongside plenty of shots of animated characters shouting and hitting each there, can be found in this week's Elemental Gelade!
Ergo Proxy
(Fuse)
Saturday June 9 12:00am - Episode 1 "Awakening" (Repeats Thu June 14 12:00am)
Ergo Proxy may not achieve the brilliance of Studio Manglobe's inaugural TV outing, Samurai Champloo, but it's a well-executed and stylish show in its own right. Imagine, if you dare, a proto-utopia of law-abiding humanoid androids named Romdeau, and a series of grisly murders that could turn their proto-utopia into a proto... non-utopia. Enter Real Mayar, cybernetic detective extraordinaire, who attempts to solve this puzzling case and restore law and order to Romdeau. It's like Law & Order, but with more robots, and less trials. In fact, it's not like Law & Order at all.
Eureka 7
(YTV)
Friday June 15 11:00pm - Episode 29 "Keep On Movin'" (Repeats Sat June 16 2:30am)
I guess I should buy the Eureka 7 DVDs, since I really enjoyed what I saw of the show, and it seems like Adult Swim is reticent to rerun it into oblivion like their other series. Lucky for you Canadians, YTV is rolling out another batch of Eureka 7 episodes as we speak, so others may learn from my mistakes. This week, the Gekko is in need of repairs, and the Gekkostate have no choice but to visit the military base where it was originally built, while a young lad named Lieutenant Dominic is introduced.
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo
(ImaginAsianTV)
Tuesday June 12 6:30pm - Episode 20 "Goodbye, Eugenie" (Repeats Tue June 12 9:30pm, Wed June 13 2:00am, 1:30pm)
This week on Gankutsuou, once again, cross-dressing saves the day! Specifically, the besotted Eugenie is set to marry, against her will, and Albert and Beppo resolve to save her. Thank god for gender-bending hysterics!
Gundam SEED Destiny
(YTV)
Friday June 15 9:30pm - Episode 15 "Return to the Battlefield" (Repeats Sat June 16 1:30am)
This week's Gundam SEED Destiny, IN CANADA, has a lot of "Gundam Action"! If by "Gundam Action," you mean "lots of interior monologue on the nature of war and self." So watch as animated characters parrot the ideas of Sun Tzu, but in a futuristic setting with robots!
Kyo Kara Maoh
(ImaginAsianTV)
Tuesday June 12 5:30pm - Episode 20 "Hero Vs. Maoh, Part 2" (Repeats Tue June 12 8:30pm, Wed June 13 1:00am, 12:30pm)
What else would a confused high school student-turned-demonic-monarch do, but engage in plenty of adventures in his newfound fantasy home? A routine trip to see a dragon goes well, until the troupe runs afoul of a supposed "hero" with a nasty vendetta against the so-called Demon King.
The Law of Ueki
(ImaginAsianTV)
Tuesday June 12 6:00pm - Episode 20 "The Law of Cat and Mouse" (Repeats Tue June 12 9:00pm, Wed June 13 1:30am, 1:00pm)
The Law of Ueki returns for another 30 minutes of characters shouting attack names back and forth, but with a twist! Ueki's newest foe has transformed them into mice, with their objective being... eaten by a cat. Whoever wins, we lose.
Lupin III
(G4TechTV Canada)
Monday June 11 8:30pm - Episode 26 "The Little Princess of Darkness"
The endearingly iconic Lupin III ends his brief detour into Canadian territory with the last of his 26 episode season, wherein the idiot savant crosses paths with a girl named Alice, who takes a shine to his thieving ways, and becomes an apt pupil of sorts.
MAR
(YTV)
Friday June 15 7:00pm - Episode 3 "Jack's Battle Shovel in Action!"
Sadly, it appears that MAR and The Prince of Tennis have been given the unceremonious boot by the Cartoon Network, it seems. Those looking for a fix of the prickly-haired Ginta and his misadventures in the fantasy world populated by mustachioed, talking weapons need to look online; or, it would seem, to YTV. This week on MAR (in umlaut-vision!), IN CANADA, Ginta helps a young farming lad named Jack stand up to the werewolves that steal his crops with his trusty Battle Shovel! Couldn't all shovels technically be considered "Battle Shovels" if flailed hard and fast enough? The sociopolitical questions MAR raises!
Naruto
(Cartoon Network)
Saturday June 9 9:00pm - Episode 90 "Unforgivable! A Total Lack of Respect"
Naruto and his filthy-minded surrogate father, Jiraiya, finally catch up to the elusive and gambling-obsessed Tsunade, who refuses the kind offer to become the next Hokage, which then enrages Naruto, who then challenges her, and then more stuff happens.
(YTV)
Friday June 15 8:00pm - Episode 85 "Hate Among the Uchihas: The Last of the Clan"
Sasuke is finally given the chance to take his long-overdue revenge out on his murderous older brother, Itachi, but will the sullen, revenge-obsessed lad last against his brother? Remember, blood is thicker than water, but liquor is quicker.
One Piece
(Cartoon Network)
Saturday June 9 10:30pm - Episode 92 "The Sweat Threat"
The sad thing is, it probably took nearly two weeks of intense negotiations and board meetings for the marketing gurus at 4Kids to come up with such a wonderfully lame title for this episode. Too bad the rest of the effort is a wasted one; let's just run out the clock and wait until August arrives, when we'll finally get that real One Piece TV dub. This episode has Luffy fighting Crocodile again, while Vivi and the others try to stop a cannon from being fired and destroying things.
Orguss
(ImaginAsianTV)
-Monday June 11 8:30am - Episode 1 "Space-Time Destruction" (Repeats Tue June 12 5:00am)
-Tuesday June 12 8:30am - Episode 2 "Lonely Wolf" (Repeats Wed June 13 5:00am)
-Wednesday June 13 8:30am - Episode 3 "Pretty Machine" (Repeats Thu June 14 5:00am)
-Thursday June 14 8:30am - Episode 4 "Caravan" (Repeats Fri June 15 5:00am)
-Friday June 15 8:30am - Episode 5 "Lovers" (Repeats Sat June 16 5:00am)
How puzzling; Orguss is part of the "Super Dimension" series as supervised by Macross creator Noboru Ishiguro, but it was left out of the Macross amalgamation that was Robotech, in favor of the lamer Mospeada? Anyway, 80's mecha fans have a lot to go nuts for here, as Orguss finally makes its true debut in the US after a disastrous attempt to dub the series by now-defunct early anime pioneers U.S. Renditions. The story itself is fairly rote, with a pilot attempting to set disparate time dimensions straight after messing things up with the Space/Time Oscillation bomb. But the charmingly retro designs, straightforward storytelling and action scenes, and generally awesome 80's cool means its the perfect thing to watch while listening to The Police and figuring out that Rubix Cube.
Pokemon
(Cartoon Network)
-Monday June 11 7:30pm - Episode 471 "Gettin' Twiggy With It"
-Tuesday June 12 7:30pm - Episode 472 "Different Stroked for Different Blokes"
-Wednesday June 13 7:30pm - Episode 473 "Like It or Lup It"
-Thursday June 14 7:30pm - Episode 474 "Gymbaliar"
I'm playing the new Pokemon DS game, and liking it. I still have no idea why these games are so enamored by kids these days; they're awfully slow-paced, and the amount of stuff in the game is awfully complicated; certainly the sort of thing that would cause an upturned nose and a snort for my discerned game-playing tastes at that age. Regardless, the Pokemon anime ties itself to these new games with another season featuring more Pokemonning than ever before! See and thrill along as Ash Ketchem and his trusty Pikachu and Pokemon friends and foes do new stuff!
Remi
(ImaginAsianTV)
-Monday June 11 6:00am - Episode 5 "Remi's First Performance" (Repeats Mon June 11 9:00am, Tue June 12 4:30am)
-Tuesday June 12 6:00am - Episode 6 "Remi and the Open-Air Classroom" (Repeats Tue June 12 9:00am, Wed June 13 4:30am)
-Wednesday June 13 6:00am - Episode 7 "Do-Re-Mi-Fa Remi" (Repeats Wed June 13 9:00am, Thu June 14 4:30am)
-Thursday June 14 6:00am - Episode 8 "Remi Lost" (Repeats Thu June 14 9:00am, Fri June 15 4:30am)
-Friday June 15 6:00am - Episode 9 "Grace, the First Friend" (Repeats Fri June 15 9:00am, Sat June 16 4:30am)
Here's a delightful surprise; a part of renowned studio TMS' "World Masterpiece Theater" series coming to American TV after an all-too-long absence! Sadly, Remi isn't part of now-Studio Ghibli owners Miyazaki or Takahata's oeuvre, but Remi is an oft-overlooked fan favorite from Japan that has seemingly visited every other western country in some capacity over the years, but never the US. Based upon, like the rest of the World Masterpiece Theater milieu, a classic children's book in France, Remi is a happy-go-lucky boy living alone with his mother in the French countryside. Until, that is, his wonderful, caring estranged father sells the lad to a traveling musician to make a few bucks. Sounds like a sure-fire recipe for fun and adventure to me!
Samurai Champloo
(Razer)
Sunday June 10 9:30pm - Episode 25 "Evanescent Encounter, Part 2"
Samurai Champloo's appropriately evanescent ending continues, wherein Fuu finally encounters her elusive "sunflower samurai," Jin duels with a figure from his past, and Mugen just kinda gets stuck in the middle.
Tenjho Tenge
(Fuse)
Saturday June 9 12:30am - Episode 1 "Sanctuary"
Tenjho Tenge is a bit of an odd duck - in the process of toning down the hyperviolent, highly sexualized manga by Oh!Great (one of the best pen names ever, by the way - take THAT, O. Henry!), much of the fun and decadent charm was seemingly removed as well. Nonetheless, Tenjho Tenge should whet the appetite of many seeking meaningless cleavage shots and bloody fists ramming into equally bloody faces. The show begins as street punk Souichiro Nagi arrives with his childhood friend, Bob, to the mysterious Todo Academy, a school known for its long history of tough martial artists.
Zatch Bell
(YTV)
Friday June 15 8:30pm - Episode 73 "Dr. Riddles, You'll Always Be My King!"
I'll admit I haven't been watching Zatch Bell lately, but with a character named Dr. Riddles, how could I stay away? And you get to see him fight alongside the good guys, even, to stop the villainous E.O.! I'm assuming that's an acronym for something, but I have no idea what what for.
MOVIES/SPECIALS
Appleseed
(Encore Action)
Saturday June 9 12:00am
Karas: The Prophecy
(Encore Action)
Sunday June 10 10:20am (Repeats Mon June 11 6:15am, Thu June 14 4:00am, 2:30am, Fri June 15 12:00am)
Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade
(Encore Action)
Tuesday June 12 5:45am (Repeats Tue June 12 4:35pm)
Alongside the new Ghost in the Shell feature, we have the usual rabble on the usual places cluttering up the lineup: Appleseed and Karas are both pretty meh (although emphasis on the "pretty" part), while Jin-Roh is an awesome character study but not so much an awesome action movie.
Pokemon: The First Movie
(Cartoon Network)
Monday June 11 12:30pm
God only knows why, but the thought of the Cartoon Network airing the first Pokemon feature film just seems so... quaint to me. A sad thought, though, that the highest-grossing anime feature in Amerca is this movie, which made a modest (in Hollywood standards, anyway) 80 million dollars.
I suppose that's all for this week, in regards to new and interesting stuff anyway. I should be back next week, takin' care of business as usual. And if any other upstart networks try to air unique and interesting shows, especially those unseen in the West, I'll go show 'em what fer. See you in seven days!
