Mediacorp Partners Madhouse Inc for Computer Generated "3D Anime" Feature Film – Yona Yona Penguin
Singapore, 12 May 2008 – MediaCorp and Japanese animation company, Madhouse Inc are proud to announce a collaboration on a 3D CGI Japanese animation film, Yona Yona Penguin - created and produced by Madhouse Inc and French company Denis Friedman Productions.
The film is directed by Rintarō, renowned Japanese animator who has made his mark in Japanese anime as the director of numerous anime TV series and films (Astro Boy, Galaxy Express 999, Harmagedon, Metropolis).
Yona Yona Penguin tells a story about the adventures of 3 characters from 3 different worlds, who travel to an enchanted land. The film shows how friendship and trust can be formed despite the divisions that exist among people, in a world full of preconceived notions and discrimination.
Produced at a budget of US$13 million, Yona Yona Penguin will be presented in two original versions: Japanese and French with English subtitles. It is targeted for worldwide theatrical release in the middle of 2009.
Rintarō, director of Yona Yong Penguin says, “Though 3D animation is represented well by Pixar titles and other Hollywood films, Madhouse's mission is to merge that type of technology with the sensibility and expertise of 2D animation – an aesthetic that has been cultivated for over 40 years. This exciting blend will be presented as a new style of 3D animation never seen before.”
Mr Lucas Chow, CEO MediaCorp says, "We are very excited to be part of this project. As an investor in the film, we see this as a first step to a potential long-term collaboration with Madhouse, one of the most reputable animation companies in Japan. As the distributor in Singapore and Malaysia, we will use our multiple platforms to publicise the film, aiming to bring the film to as wide an audience as possible."
"We believe that Japanese animation is enjoyed among the variety of world class content. We are very excited to partner with MediaCorp on our first 3D CG Japanese animation – Yona Yona Penguin. We believe that the collaboration is one step forward in taking Japanese animation to the international markets", Mr Jungo Maruta, CEO Madhouse says.
