posted on by Alex Mateo
Animation studio Fanworks (Aggretsuko) announced on Wednesday that it is collaborating with ADK Emotions and Chinese company Quan on a short anime titled Haretsu Tantan-kun (Break Out Mr. Egg). The anime will begin streaming on October 21 on 10 video apps including Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok.
The anime will have 24 episodes, each around 15 seconds to a minute long, and they will be uploaded twice a week. The anime will be framed vertically for a smartphone's portrait view. The project marks the first time a Japanese company will distribute an anime in this way for China's video app market.
The anime's story follows Mr. Egg, a character who has achieved two million sticker downloads in the Chinese social media app WeChat. In the setting of a refrigerator, a companionship unfolds between the good but slightly pessimistic and fragile Mr. Egg, and Hyokolien, a chick who breaks out of Mr. Egg's shell and asserts his opinions.
Fanworks plans to establish a broad range of business development for the project, including merchandise and games to take advantage of the characters' popularity.
