Section23 Films announced in its May release slate on Thursday that Maiden Japan will release the Yona Yona Penguin anime film on Blu-ray Disc on May 15. The release will have both English and Japanese audio.
Maiden Japan describes the story:
The sleeves of Coco's penguin coat are sewn together to look like flippers, so it might seem a bit awkward to wear. However, Coco's father gave the coat to her before he disappeared, so she wears it every time she goes out exploring. What Coco doesn't know is that the Goblins have a legend about a brave flightless bird and when Coco unexpectedly ends up in their realm, they all think that Coco is the Penguin who can save them from the evil Emperor of Darkness! But how can a 6-year-old girl stop an army of demons? Coco doesn't know, but together with her new friends Chaley the Goblin and Zammie the fallen Angel, she's certainly going to try in YONA YONA PENGUIN!
Director Rintarō (Space Pirate Captain Harlock, Metropolis) and the animation company he co-founded, Madhouse Studios (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Highlander: Vengeance), worked with Paris-based Denis Friedman Productions to produce the 2009 CG-animated film. The film won the Audience Award for Best Children's Animated Feature at Belgium's Brussels Animation Film Festival in 2010. The film had its U.S. premiere in New York City in 2010, but has not previously been released on home video in North America.
