Gargoyle story about "Demon Vice-Commander" Hijikata Toshizō drawn by Aлёша's Rururu Kondoh
Writer Tow Ubukata (Fafner, Mardock Scramble, Le Chevalier d'Eon) and artist Rururu Kondoh (Aлёша!, Takamare! Takamaru, Ten Carat Torte!) launched their Gargoyle manga in the November issue of Shonengahosha's Young King Ours magazine on Monday. The action adventure story is set in Bakumatsu, the era that spelled the end of the shoguns' rule over Japan. The story follows Hijikata Toshizō, a Shinsengumi police force member who was nicknamed the "Demon Vice-Commander" in real life. In the first 46-page chapter, Hijikata confronts a surprise attack by the mysterious Yase Doji people on The Shinsen-gumi.
In an interview, Ubukata revealed that the manga was conceived with the idea of "Shinsengumi in the style of X-Men."
