Valve Offers Prototype of Steam Machine Gaming System
posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
Valve announced that it will send 300 units of its "Steam Machine" game console to beta testers with the console's Steam Operating System. Valve will be beta-testing its own console "designed for users who want the most control possible over their hardware. Other boxes will optimize for size, price, quietness, or other factors."
The consoles are slated for retail in 2014 with different models by multiple manufacturers. Valve co-founder Gabe Newell previously stated that there would be multiple version of the then dubbed "Steam Box" console, based on performance specifications. A version known as "Piston," was shown CES Las Vegas in January. At the time, Newell stated the console would run on the Linux OS.
