The city of San Diego and Comic-Con International have agreed to extend their current contract by one year to 2016. The agreement to stay in San Diego through 2015 was made in 2010.
Attendance at the convention reached a max capacity of about 125,000 people in 2007. The organizers had considered moving to larger facilities in Los Angeles or Anaheim, but ultimately chose to renew its contract with San Diego.
The convention's fiscal impact for the city is estimated to be around US$180 million. The city plans to start construction on the expansion to the city's convention center next year, and then have it ready for use in 2016.
