Junior Chihara Remakes Minami no Teiō Loan Shark Manga
posted on by Egan Loo
36-year-old comedian Junior Chihara will star in a live-action television remake of Dai Tennōji and Rikiya Gō's Minami no Teiō (King of Minami) manga series on September 21. The Shin Minami no Teiō (New King of Minami) will be the first live-action version since 2007.
The original manga centers around Ginjirō Manda, a loan shark who charges toichi — 10% more interest every 10 days, or 365% every year. Thanks to his unrelenting money-collecting tactics, he is feared as "Minami no Oni" or the "Demon" of Osaka's Minami business district.
The manga launched in Nihonbungeisha's Weekly Manga Goraku magazine in 1992, and 105 books volumes have since been compiled and published. The manga already inspired 64 films and videos with veteran actor Riki Takeuchi (Detroit Metal City, Battle Royale II: Requiem) in the lead role. In the new revival, cast members Shunsuke Daitō, Ren Ōsugi, Hisako Manda, Miho Shiraishi, Masahiko Nishimura, and Hidekazu Akai will appear alongside Chihara.
