posted on by Egan Loo
The Spring Showcase 2010 event of the Hawaii International Film Festival will be screening One Piece Film Strong World, the 10th anime film based on Eiichiro Oda's One Piece pirate manga, in Honolulu on April 18 and 20. Unlike previous One Piece films, Oda had personally overseen the new film's production. Munehisa Sakai's film opened in Japan in December, and as of February, it has earned 4.7 billion yen (US$53 million) in ticket sales.
On April 19, the Spring Showcase will also show Summer Wars, the award-winning film from Mamoru Hosoda (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time) about a modern-day family on a midsummer adventure in the real and virtual worlds. The film opened in Japan on August 1, 2009, and has since been scheduled in Spain's Sitges, England's Leeds Film Festival, Germany's Berlin International Film Festival, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the New York International Children's Film Festival, and the Irish Film Institute in Dublin.
In addition to the two anime films, the Spring Showcase will screen the Japanese films Beautiful Islands, Cafe Seoul, The Chef of South Polar, Robogeisha, The Summit: A Chronicle of Stones, and Villon's Wife. The Spring Showcase will run from April 16 to April 22, and the Kawaii Kon convention will also take place in Honolulu from April 16 to April 18.
