Live-action Ashita no Joe Helmer Yasuharu Hasebe Dies

Live-action television and film director Yasuharu Hasebe passed away of pneumonia in a Kanagawa hospital on June 14 at 5:07 p.m. He was 77. He was born in Tokyo, and he leaves behind his wife Takako, his actress daughter Kanae, and his screenwriting son Bakushino.
Hasebe is best known for overseeing gritty, sometimes violent, television and film projects in the crime and action genres. In particular, he directed the 1986-1987 Abunai Deka detective television series and the long-running 2000-2009 Aibō detective television and film franchise. He also directed the live-action television adaptation of Mikiya Mochizuki's Wild 7 police action manga and the live-action film adaptation of Ikki Kajiwara and Tetsuya Chiba's Ashita no Joe boxing manga. His final project was the theatrical Aibō film, which opened in Japan this past March. It is based on a novel by his own son, who also wrote for the Aibō television series
