Zipang's Kawaguchi Takes Break to Heal Broken Arm (Updated)

April bicycle accident takes Kaiji Kawaguchi away from drawing until May

The 23rd issue of Kodansha's Morning magazine has announced on Thursday that manga creator Kaiji Kawaguchi had fractured his right arm in a bicycle accident, and therefore would be taking a hiatus from his Zipang manga until the end of May. (Kawaguchi draws with his right arm.) The accident occurred on April 14 when Kawaguchi was going out to get lunch and skidded in the rain. The fracture occurred at the top of his right radius bone, and he will need to rest his arm for at least two weeks.

Kawaguchi published a message in the current issue to announce the hiatus and added, "I tried drawing with my left arm, but…." His message includes a drawing of the Zipang character Yosuke Kadomatsu (shown at right) that he attempted with his left arm. Kodansha also posted a photograph of where the accident occurred, the doctor's medical note on Kawaguchi's treatment, and a photograph of Kawaguchi himself with his arm in a sling.

Before Zipang, Kawaguchi drew the Eisner Award-nominated Eagle manga, The Silent Service, and A Spirit of The Sun. Viz published the Eagle manga in North America, Central Park Media released The Silent Service anime special, and Geneon Entertainment (USA) released the Zipang television anime.
