"Chainsaw Maid," Soul Eater to Compete at Annecy Fest
posted on by Egan Loo
On March 12, France's Annecy International Animation Film Festival announced most of the works in its official selection for this year's June 8-13 event, including five Japanese animated works. Takena Nagao's clay-animated "Chainsaw Maid" work will compete in the short films category. In this short, "a faithful sexy maid fights back against zombies with a big chainsaw" to save her master and his daughter. Nagao personally posted this short on the YouTube video-streaming website. Kazuo Umezu and the rest of the 10th DigiCon6 judges gave this short an Outstanding Performance Award last year. Kunio Katō's "Tsumiki no Ie" ("La Maison en Petits Cubes" or "House of Blocks") anime won the Annecy Cristal grand prize in this category last year before going on to win the Best Animated Short Film Oscar at this year's Academy Awards.
In the TV series category, the first episode of Takuya Igarashi and Bones' Soul Eater is competing alongside the first episode of Toei Animation's Uchi no 3 Shimai. The Soul Eater anime adapts Atsushi Ohkubo's supernatural action manga of the same name, while Uchi no 3 Shimai is based on Pretz Matsumoto's manga blog about a mother raising three daughters. Two student projects, Minako Matsuda's "Himawarisou" ("A Sunflower") and Masaki Okuda, Ryō Ōkawara, and Yutaro Ogawa's "Orchestra," are competing in the graduation films category. Mirai Mizue's "Jam" and Fumio Ohi's "Meisou" will be screened out of the competition.
