Genius Party Actor Yagira Hospitalized After Overdose
posted on by Egan Loo
18-year-old actor Yuuya Yagira ingested large amounts of medicine at his Tokyo apartment at around 2:30 a.m. on Friday, but he survived the incident after he was sent to a nearby hospital. According to an acquaintance that spoke to the Asahi Shimbun paper, Yagira was in an argument with his family when he tried to ingest some cold medicine that happened to be nearby, all at once. His surprised family then reportedly called 119 (Japan's emergency phone number). The Tokyo Fire Department said it dispatched an ambulance after receiving a call at 2:21 a.m., and added that the hospitalized 18-year-old male had moderate symptoms of acute poisoning but is in stable condition. In particular, the patient is said to have taken over 100 pills.
Yagira is best known inside and outside Japan for starring in Hirokazu Kore-eda's 2004 film Nobody Knows. Thanks to his performance in this film, he became the youngest winner of the Cannes Film Festival's Best Actor Award. He also appeared in the live-action Kunimitsu no Matsuri drama in 2003 and voiced the lead role in "Baby Blue," director Shinichiro Watanabe's contribution to the Genius Party anime film anthology.
