posted on by Egan Loo
Masaru Uchida, a former editor-in-chief of Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine and supervising consultant on Sony Pictures Entertainment's Animax anime channel, died of lung cancer on May 30. He was 73. Uchida was the third editor-in-chief in Shonen Magazine's 50-year history, and he oversaw the popular baseball manga Kyojin no Hoshi and the boxing manga Ashita no Joe (pictured at right) after being promoted to the top position in 1970. He then co-developed anime projects based upon Kodansha manga such as Devilman, What's Michael?, and Wrestler Gundan Seisenshi Robin Jr. He later advised Sony Pictures Entertainment on the launch of its Animax channel in 1998.
