2008 Gegege Anime Film to Have 6 Versions Screened
posted on by Egan Loo
Toei Animation revealed on May 11 that its Gegege no Kitarō: Nihon Bakuretsu!! supernatural anime film will be screened in December in six different versions — one for each major region of Japan. Specifically, the half-human title character's female companion, Neko Musume, will "cosplay" in six different outfits such as the snow entity Yukinko in the northern prefecture of Hokkaido, a maiko (apprentice geisha) in the ancient capital of Kyoto, and the Shīsā lion-dog in the southern island of Okinawa.
This film is the Gegege no Kitarō franchise's first full-length animated feature. It is being developed to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the original television series. (The television series, in turn, is based on Shigeru Mizuki's supernatural manga.) The project is also the first Japanese film to attempt to release so many versions simultaneously. The film has been in production for two years, or twice the length for a typical film's production schedule.
