Japanese “global metal” band ASTERISM released a single with Indian fusion band Pineapple Express on December 27 in the second India-Japan metal collaboration in 2024. The single “Metal Gandhara” combines ASTERISM's heavy, new-age sound with the Bengaluru-based fusion ensemble's proficiency with Indian folk instruments.
ASTERISM released the below music video for the song on Monday. The video features the three members of ASTERISM, the five members of Pineapple Express, and a showcase of Indian folk instruments floating in the background.
Indian metalheads and anime fans are pretty much getting their year's playlist sorted as this single dropped right on the heels of Japanese heavy metal idol trio Babymetal's single with Indian metal band Bloodywood. The single titled "Bekhauf" released last month and has a fully animated video where the band members take on heroic anime-esque avatars.
Produced under the supervision of over 100 Indian production staff members, the music video for “Metal Gandhara” was shot in Bengaluru. While on their visit to India ASTERISM took social media by a storm with an impromptu performance after the NH7 music festival got canceled. The band performed at Hard Rock Cafe in Pune, Maharashtra on December 14 and even performed a medley of anime OPs featuring the title tracks of Demon Slayer, Naruto, Oshi no Ko, and other popular titles.
ASTERISM's song "Crescendo" serves as the opening theme song for the television anime of Ibarakino's Even Given the Worthless "Appraiser" Class, I'm Actually the Strongest (Fugūshoku [Kanteishi] ga Jitsu wa Saikyō Datta - Naraku de Kitaeta Saikyō no [Shingan] de Musō Suru) light novel series. The series debuted on January 9.
Pineapple Express formed in 2016 and plays a combination of carnatic, rock, experimental, electronic, and progressive music.
