posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
Crunchyroll announced on Tuesday that it has paired up with digital publisher WEBTOON to bring new, original animated content to the streaming service. The new animated projects will be based on WEBTOON's own property catalog.
WEBTOON's catalog includes many manga-inspired series. The platform's popular web comics include Lore Olympus by Rachel Smythe, True Beauty by Yaongyi (voted #4 in this year's Tsugi ni Kuru manga awards web category), unOrdinary by uru-chan, I Love Yoo by Quimchee, and SubZero by Junepurr. The service's comic selection ranges from romance, drama, comedy, fantasy, and thrillers.
Both WEBTOON and Crunchyroll will handle the distribution, licensing, and retail of each new series.
Crunchyroll's parent company Ellation launched Ellation Studios last year. The division includes production facilities in Tokyo and Burbank, California.
Raye Rodriguez's High Guardian Spice will be the first "Crunchyroll Originals" animated project. It is scheduled to premiere this year.
