Japanese Village Grows Giant Godzilla: Resurgence Rice Paddy Art
posted on by Amanda Whalen
The village of Inakadate, Japan, far up north in the Aomori Prefecture, has created impressive field art to celebrate the upcoming film Godzilla: Resurgence. Nine different species of multicolored rice plants were used to create a seven-color image of Godzilla roaring menacingly.
The field spans approximately 10,000 square meters (2.47 acres or 32,808 square feet), which is about the average size of a Major League Baseball ballpark. The rice was planted in June and was tended to by local farmers and high school students, about 260 people in total. The image will remain until the rice is harvested in October.
The field art project in Inakadate is part of an ongoing effort to revitalize the village that began in 1993. Previous field art has included the Mona Lisa, the iconic tokusatsu superhero Ultraman, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Godzilla: Resurgence, known in Japan as Shin Godzilla, is co-directed by Hideaki Anno, the creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Shinji Higuchi, who directed the Attack on Titan live-action films. It will be released in Japan on July 29.
Publicity for the new movie has included an appearance by Godzilla on the anime Crayon Shin-chan, new vinyl lottery figures, Godzilla and Gudetama collaboration merchandise, and a variety of Godzilla and Evangelion crossover goods.
