Akihabara's Otaku Hotspot Radio Kaikan Building Gets a Facelift
posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
The new Radio Kaikan Building, a venerable hotspot for all things otaku in Akihabara, will reopen its doors on July 20 after getting a much-needed facelift. The original building was built in 1957 and came to house hobby shops and specialty stores including Volks, Yellow Submarine, Uchusen, Kaiyodo, and K Books.
The building was demolished in 2011 as part of the area's update including the addition of the Tsukuba Express railway route. If the building sounds familiar, it might be because it made a cameo in the Steins;Gate anime series when a satellite crashed into its roof. This was recreated on top of the real building before it was torn down.
The new Radio Kaikan Building measures 46.5 meters high and contains 10 floors, two underground levels, and a two-story radio tower (of course). Its staple hobby shops will reopen in the building, too.
