Fan Auctions Yuruyuri Ita-Motorcycle
posted on by Eric Stimson
Itasha ("pain cars") — cars covered with decals of favorite anime characters, usually moe girls — have long been a part of Japanese anime fan culture. The concept has even spread to clothing recently. These expressions of otaku culture are usually highly treasured by their owners, so it's rare when one of them ends up on auction. Yet this week, that's what's happening on Yahoo! Auctions — with a motorcycle, that is.
This particular itatansha ("pain motorcycle") is adorned with the beaming face of Akari and Chinatsu of Yuruyuri, along with smaller decals of the show's other characters. The bike is a Honda reverse-imported CBR600RRED, a high-quality race replica. It is also in excellent condition, although its safety check has expired (and the condition is described as "painful," slyly referring to the decorations). It's auctioning starting at 699,000 yen (or $6,845).
This particular motorcycle was previously on display at Niconico Chōkaigi, an annual convention devoted to Niconico Douga, Japan's popular video-sharing site. The auction closes today.
