Variety: Tom Cruise Agrees to All You Need Is Kill Film
posted on by Egan Loo
The entertainment trade magazine Variety reported on Thursday that Tom Cruise has agreed — but not yet signed up — to star in Warner Brothers' film adaptation of Hiroshi Sakurazaka's Japanese text novel All You Need Is Kill. Director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith) confirmed last year that he is attached to the proposed film.
All You Need Is Kill revolves around a battle-armored soldier who finds himself dying and re-incarnating over and over again during an alien invasion. Viz Media published Sakurazaka's novel in English to launch its Haikasoru imprint for Japanese science fiction and fantasy.
According to Variety, Warner already had Joby Harold rewrite Dante Harper's original script to accomodate Cruise's age; the original script had called for a younger actor such as Ryan Gosling or Joseph Gordon Levitt. Cruise is shooting Parmount and Skydance's One Shot film now, and Variety adds that Cruise could shoot Universal's science-fiction film Oblivion next March, followed by All You Need Is Kill later in 2012.
