Tutorial: Trench Knives

by Devin Harrigan,

For those looking to cosplay Asuma Sarutobi or Shikamaru from Naruto, these trench knives can be a fun addition to your costume.

Materials you'll need:
Cardboard
Hot glue + gun
Comic backs (or cereal boxes)
Paint
Exacto knife

  • Using this template, cut 2 copies of Shape A and 1 of Shape B from comic backs.
  • Use the same template to cut 4 copies of Shape A from cardboard.
  • Hot glue together the pieces of cardboard together to form a pair of blocks.
  • Remove a wedge from the inner side of the blade on each block so it appears to taper into a "blade."
  • Hot glue the layers of comic backs and cardboard blocks together as seen here. Make sure the finger holes line up.
  • Glue fill all of the flat edges, including the inside edges of the finger holes.
  • Use hot glue to give the edge a smooth finish.
  • Paint it (I prefer to use metallic acrylic craft paints).
