Isao Takahata's first anime film in 14 years.
This is Takahata's first film to be released on the same year as a Miyazaki film in 25 years. The last time they both released their own films the same year was when My Neighbor Totoro & Grave of the Fireflies was released as a double feature. However The Wind Rises & The Tale of Princess Kaguya are released seperately as oppose to releasing them as a double feature.
This film to this date, is the longest Studio Ghibil film that has 137 minutes and is longer than Princess Mononoke.
