Many of the episodes' titles are directly taken from the original manga. Episode 4,for example,shares its title with its corresponding chapter.
Kageyama looks like Shikamaru Nara from Naruto. Combed back ponytail and earrings. He also uses shadow magic just like Shikamaru uses shadow jutsu.
Jellal Fernandez/Siegrain bears a resemblance to Sieg Hart of Rave Master, Mashima's previous work. It was deliberately intended as fan service on Mashima's part (though Jellal initially starts as a villain).
Makarov was slated to die during the Tenrou island arc, but Mashima's editor voided the idea.
In episode 1, about 9:29, you can see Griff, another character from Rave Master, behind Natsu and Happy.
In episode 3 Plue makes his 1st appearence. He was thought to be a "dog" in Hire Mashima's Rave Master
Most of Gildarts' early mentions before his debut in episode 76 were removed. This was due to plans to end the anime early before they got to the point that Gildarts became an important character.
In episode 82, a cameo character spotted with Monkey D. Luffy wearing strawhat and a different outfit at the far background. The strawhat is taken from One Piece.
